Linking urban park soundscape cognitive image to recreational visitors’ perceived restorativeness
Introduction Accelerating urbanization has intensified psychological stress and mental health problems among urban residents. As accessible natural spaces for leisure and recreation, urban parks have received increasing scholarly attention for the potential restorative effects of their soundscapes. Existing studies have mainly focused on the restorative benefits of visual landscapes or examined only the direct relationship between soundscapes and…
Tourism and human-elephant conflict in China
Human-wildlife conflict has become a challenge in global biodiversity conservation. Existing studies mainly view tourism as an economic instrument for mitigating conflict, with limited attention on the embodied aspects of living with dangerous wildlife for the residents. Drawing on embodiment as the theoretical framework and multispecies ethnography as a methodological approach, this study explores how tourism reshapes resident-elephant conflicts…
Weight change across adulthood in relation to ultrasound-defined metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease
Background: Although obesity is a well-established risk factor for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), the impact of long-term weight trajectories on MASLD risk remains unclear. We aimed to examine the association between weight change trajectories across adulthood and the risk of ultrasound-defined MASLD. Methods: We analysed data from 4999 participants from the Healthy Happy Aging Community Cohort. Weight trajector…

Compromising, negotiating and supplementing
This article investigated the mothering work done by Chinese migrant women in co-parenting with alternative caregivers to rear their left-behind children. This study draws on narrative interviews with 15 rural Chinese women who migrated to the city for work, leaving their children behind in rural hometowns to be cared for by other caregivers. Using ‘mothering work’ as an analytical perspective, the analysis found that migrant mothers adopt compro…
Promoting Urban Sustainable Development
As a new type of urban infrastructure, the underground wastewater treatment plant (UWTP) is originally constructed to better meet the needs of urban sustainable development and to further improve land use efficiency. In addressing urbanization challenges, UWTPs not only improve water quality but also hold the potential to mitigate air pollution through their enclosed treatment processes. This paper uses data from Chinese cities to analyze the eff…

Effects of Deontological and Altruistic Guilt on Empathy
Guilt as an important self‐conscious emotion plays both constructive and destructive roles in affective and cognitive processes of empathy during social interactions. To reconcile these contrasting perspectives, we explored how two distinct guilt emotions—deontological guilt (DG) and altruistic guilt (AG)—affect affective and cognitive empathy, based on a dualistic thesis of guilt. We employed auditory stories to induce participants' DG, AG and n…

Migrant mothers’ bounded agency in taking care of their left-behind children
This article studies how Chinese rural-to-urban migrant mothers exercise ‘bounded agency’ in taking care of their left-behind children. It is based on a thematic analysis of 15 remote narrative interviews with migrant mothers in China. The analysis identified three main sociocultural constraints faced by migrant mothers in their mothering practices: economic poverty, residential restrictions (the hukou system) and the traditional ideology of moth…

The Effects of Buddhist Religiosity and Aspects on Prosociality
Religion prosociality hypothesis, which predicts that religion promotes prosocial behaviors, has been verified by previous empirical research. However, the religion in the previous studies investigating Eastern religions has often been examined as a single and unified concept. In the current study, based on a few studies in the context of Western religions, we considered the religiosity as a complex construct and investigated the influence of Bud…
The enlightenment of Chinese philosophy to the construction of contemporary ecological civilization
Chinese philosophy is a philosophy of ecology. The basic problem of Chinese philosophy is the relationship between heaven and man, that is, the relationship between nature and man. This is evident in the main schools of Chinese philosophy, such as Confucianism and Taoism. A correct understanding and evaluation of Chinese ecological philosophy has important practical significance for us to reflect on the ecological imbalance and environmental dete…

Research on the carbon emission reduction effects of green finance in the context of environment regulations
The rise in carbon emissions has significantly aggravated issues related to climate change. In light of this background, there has been a strong focus on using financial methods to reduce carbon emissions. Based on panel data for China for the period 2003–2019, we examine the effects of green finance on carbon emissions and the moderating effects of environmental regulations. The results indicate that green finance development alleviates carbon e…
Is there gender inequality in the impacts of energy poverty on health
This paper aims to study the gender inequality in the health impacts of energy poverty. Using the Chinese Family Panel Studies (CFPS) 2018 data, we examine the gender heterogeneous effects of energy poverty on residents' health. The empirical results indicate that energy poverty would increase the ratio of respiratory disease, hospitalization as well as the healthcare expenditure. The effects are moderated by housework time. Moreover, we explore …
