Aid Fragmentation and Corruption
Aid fragmentation—the simultaneous operation of multiple development agencies in one setting—has long raised concerns about coordination challenges and opportunities for corruption. Leveraging unique data on project delivery in Afghanistan, we present the first microlevel empirical analysis of aid fragmentation. We find that aid delivered by a single donor can significantly reduce corruption. Projects delivered under conditions of aid fragmentati…
Network analysis of mental health knowledge and stigma among high school students in Sichuan, China
This network analysis highlights MHKQ10 and MHKQ11 as pivotal targets for stigma reduction, with misconceptions about treatment adherence linking knowledge deficits to devaluation perceptions. Gender-invariant structures suggest universal applicability for school-based interventions, aligning with China's mental health initiatives to enhance literacy and promote equity
Higher mental illness-related stigma after receiving mental health service among adolescents and youth with depressive symptoms in Chongqing, China
These findings indicate that a substantial treatment gap for depressive symptoms persists among adolescents and students in Chongqing, China. Notably, among female students, mental health service use in the past 12 months was associated with heightened mental illness-related stigma. This underscores the need for interventions that specifically address stigma in the context of mental health service use
The causal relationship between mental illness-related stigma and mental health knowledge among adolescents at different educational stages
An increase in mental health knowledge may not alleviate mental illness-related stigma among adolescent student, but might predict higher levels of stigma, particularly among university students. This suggests that educational interventions focusing solely on knowledge dissemination, without addressing emotional attitudes and social norms, may not only fail to effectively reduce stigma but could potentially produce counterproductive effects. Futu…
National representations in digital heritage exposure
Digital pictures of cultural artefacts are increasingly accessible and reused in everyday life. Does this visual exposure underlie the impression of “what our artefacts look like”, and does it have implications for the formation of national identity? Through two mixed-method studies, we demonstrated that even without external interpretation, young Chinese lay participants (mainly university students) could spontaneously categorise digital artefac…
Insomnia of students following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions in China
Following the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, insomnia remained prevalent among young Chinese students. Preexisting self-reported mental disorders, neglectful parenting, and pandemic-related maladaptive behaviors increase the risk of insomnia, whereas positive lifestyle adjustments, stable relationships, and higher maternal education appear protective. A significant association was observed between insomnia severity and symptoms of depression, …
Left over or opting out? Squeeze, mismatch and surplus in Chinese marriage markets
Marriage is declining in China. Among singles, the probability of marrying in 2019 was half that of marrying in 1999. We estimate a Choo and Siow (2006b) model using census data to quantify the relative roles of changes in population structure and changes in marital surplus, i.e., the value of marriage. We find that the increase in the supply of educated people explains half of the decline, partly due to a mismatch between highly-educated women a…
Economic evaluation of acupuncture in treating patients with pain and mental health concerns
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic and its economic impact have heightened the risk of mental health and pain-related issues. The Alberta Complementary Health Integration Project (ABCHIP) aimed to provide acupuncture to youth (aged 24 and under) and seniors (aged 55 and above) experiencing chronic pain, pain management issu…
Epidemiology and Sarima model of deaths in a tertiary comprehensive hospital in Hangzhou from 2015 to 2022
Hospitals should enhance the management of sudden cardiac death, acute myocardial infarction, severe craniocerebral injury, lung cancer, and lung infection to reduce the mortality rate. The SARIMA model can be employed for predicting the number of deaths
Language Change and Morphological Processes in Contemporary Chinese
The Chinese language has witnessed remarkable changes in the past several decades, marked by a rapid rise of new words, frequent innovation of pseudo-affixes, and a notable increase in word length. By analyzing the creation, spread, and expansion of the new word 健康码 Jiankang-ma "health QR code", this study sheds light on how language change takes place and how nonce formation is brought into being. Following the explosion of COVID-19 in China, 健康…
Associations between coping styles, gender, their interaction and non-suicidal self-injury among middle school students in rural west China
There is an association between coping styles and self-injury among middle school students in rural areas in western China, with gender playing a moderating role. Active attention should be paid to students' coping styles and encouraging them to adopt positive coping styles as well as avoid negative coping styles, especially in the case of girls, which can help prevent self-injury
