Stay or leave: The Immigration High School Entrance Examination Policy and parental intention for migrant children's education-driven return migration in China
This paper investigates the impact of the Immigration High School Entrance Examination Policy (IHSEE) on parental intention for migrant children's education-driven return migration (PIER) in China. Using data from the China Education Panel Survey (CEPS) in 2014-2015 academic year, we find that IHSEE restrictions not only significantly increase PIER, but also strengthen such intention as policy constraints become more severe among migrant children…
Does Digital Infrastructure Facilitate Rural‐to‐Urban Migration? Evidence From China
This paper exploits the staggered rollout of the Broadband China Policy as a quasi‐natural experiment to examine the impact of digital infrastructure expansion on rural‐to‐urban migration in China. Using data from the 2012 and 2018 waves of the China Family Panel Studies, we provide robust evidence that improvements in digital infrastructure significantly increase the probability of rural residents migrating to urban areas by 4.7%, corresponding …

Using the data of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, we found that milit…

Mobile payment and subjective well-being in rural China
We explore the impact of mobile payment usage on the subjective well-being (S.W.B.) of rural residents in China using unique data from the China Household Finance Survey (C.H.F.S.). The estimated results show that using mobile payment has increased the S.W.B. of rural residents, and this finding still holds through several robust checks. The mechanism analysis suggests that the positive effect of mobile payment is partially explained by the reduc…

Haze pollution reduction in Chinese cities: Has digital financial development played a role
Based on the exogenous shock of digital financial development in China in 2013, a difference-in-differences (DID) model is set up in this paper to investigate the causal relationship between digital financial development and haze pollution reduction. The finding of the paper is that a one standard deviation increase in digital finance after 2013 decreases the PM 2.5 concentrations by 0.2708 standard deviations. After a number of robustness checks…
