Delivering sustainable practice? A case study of the Scottish Active Schools programme
Since 1999, concerns about Scotland's future health and economic performance have profoundly impacted on the new Scottish Executive. Research highlighting an obesity crisis facing young Scots has, together with the work of Scotland's Physical Activity Task Force and Physical Education Review Group, encouraged the education of all young Scots to be more physically active. One vehicle for this is the Active Schools programme that seeks to engage al…
Scottish Political Parties and Leisure Policy
This article extends literature analysing post devolution Scottish leisure policy (Jarvie and Thomson 1999; Morrow and Wheatley 2003; Jarvie 2003; Reid 2004) by identifying and comparing the leisure policies of the main Scottish political parties. The social democratic consensus between them led this article to examine if leisure policy exhibited such ideological sameness' (Kerevan 2003a, b). While a social democratic emphasis on an active role f…
Showcasing Scotland? A Case Study of the MTV Europe Music Awards Edinburgh03
This paper critically reviews the public policy framework underpinning the MTV Europe Music Awards Edinburgh03. It argues that, because local organisers did not advocate local cultural participation as a key policy, preferring an economic rationale of marketing and tourism, such involvement was limited. The organisers’ global and economic rationale led to the official view that MTV’s status within global youth culture re‐imaged Edinburgh as a dyn…

Adam Smith's Stadial Analysis as a Sequence of Societal Growth Trajectories
This paper indicates how a stadial analysis of the Smithian type can be constructed explicitly. It involves treating each stage in terms of a complete growth trajectory. The paper starts by constructing an explicit example of a complete, single growth trajectory. Then the Smithian stadial analysis is constructed explicitly as a sequence of such growth trajectories. This sequence has the characteristic that new growth trajectories emerge for new s…

The Random Walk Hypothesis and the Recent Behaviour of Equity Prices in Britain
This paper is concerned with one of the most illustrious hypotheses examined under the second approach, namely the random walk hypothesis.[3] This hypothesis postulates that the changes share prices are independent, and hence produce a random walk price levels. Over time, however, the relative frequency of outcomes is stable. An elaboration of the hypothesis is given the next section of this article. Recent writers have analyzed not only share pr…
