  • The Volcanic Crisis of Persian Babylonia (426–424 b . c . e .)

Conor Kostick, Francis Ludlow et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Interdisciplinary…•2026

Ice-core, dendrochronological, and climate-model evidence identifies an extraordinarily powerful volcanic eruption around 426 b.c.e. that produced severe multi-year cooling and increased precipitation through strong stratospheric aerosol forcing. Model results indicate sustained cooling and wetter conditions in Babylonia, incompatible with stable date cultivation and likely causing crop failure. Statistical analysis shows a sharp rise in land mor…

  • Children as playful artists

    Isobel Wisher, F Riede et al.•ARTICLE•Hunter Gatherer Research•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 100

Children's agential behaviours in the archaeological record have often been overlooked. Despite efforts to centre children in the past through 'an archaeology of childhood', there remains a fundamental challenge of rigorously distinguishing children's behaviours from those of adults. In Upper Palaeolithic art, this has been addressed through the analysis of anatomical measurements of traces produced by hands and figures, demonstrating that childr…

  • Habit and the Potential for Actor Training with Immersive and Virtual Production Technology

    Open Access•John Matthews•ARTICLE•Performance Research•2023

The advance of immersive and virtual technologies draws into starker contrast the analogue modalities of dominant approaches to actor training and makes more visible certain of their dynamics, which are analysed here using a philosophical framework of habit and habitus as propositionally causative. This technology is disruptive to habit and habitus in actor training and signifies potential to experiment with these dynamics to address extant probl…

  • Designing diversified renewable energy systems to balance multisector performance

Open Access•José María Faci González, James Tomlinson et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Sustainability•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Renewable energy system development and improved operation can mitigate climate change. In many regions, hydropower is called to counterbalance the temporal variability of intermittent renewables like solar and wind. However, using hydropower to integrate these renewables can affect aquatic ecosystems and increase cross-sectoral water conflicts. We develop and apply an artificial intelligence-assisted multisector design framework in Ghana, which …

  • Air Quality Dispersion Modelling to Evaluate Cipp Installation Styrene Emissions

Open Access•Elizabeth Matthews, John Kraft et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) is one of the most popular in situ rehabilitation techniques to repair sewer and water pipes. While there are multiple approaches to curing CIPP, steam-curing of styrene-based resins has been found to be associated with air-borne chemical emissions. Health officials, utilities and industry representatives have recognized the need to know more about these emissions, especially styrene. Such concern has led to multiple st…

Open Access•John Matthews, Scott Mcgill et al.•BOOK•From the Tetrarchs to the…•2010

An integrated collection of essays examining the politics, social networks, law, historiography, and literature of the later Roman world. The volume treats three central themes: the first section looks at political and social developments across the period and argues that, in spite of the stress placed upon traditional social structures, many elements of Roman life remained only slightly changed. The second section focuses upon biographical texts…

  • The Emperor and his Historians

Open Access•John Matthews•OTHER•A Companion to Greek and Roman…•2007

In a famous passage of Decline and Fall Edward Gibbon described the period of Roman history from the death of the emperor Domitian in 96 ce to the accession of Commodus in 180 as the time in which the human race enjoyed the greatest happiness and prosperity it had ever known. It may not be appreciated that Gibbon's words are an allusion to another great historian of his own day, William Robertson, who in his History of the Reign of Charles V publ…

John T Matthews, John Matthews•ARTICLE•Mind Culture and Activity•2006

In this study, I gave a group of six to eight very young Chinese Singaporean children (between 2 and 4 years of age) three identical digital video cameras, plus tripods, and tracked their development in moviemaking over a 2-year period. The children were allowed to explore the cameras freely, though the investigators offered advice and support as and when necessary. Before this study, I had made detailed longitudinal studies of British and Asian …

  • When intake exceeds input

Open Access•John Matthews, Cynthia Brown et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2004

In this paper we argue that the prosodic well-formedness conditions of a learner's native language phonology interfere with accurate perception of non-native segmental sequences. This interference induces a perceptual illusion effect due to which learners perceive an illusory vowel that, in fact, does not exist in the acoustic signal. In this way, a learner's percept of the L2 input, or L2 intake, actually includes more segmental material than is…

    Open Access•John Matthews, John V Matthews et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2003

The “upper pit” at the Lost Chicken placer gold mine in east central Alaska contains fossils that provide information on the flora and insect fauna of interior Alaska just before the onset of global cooling at 2.5 myr. Fossils come from sediments interbedded with the Lost Chicken tephra (dated at 2.9 ± 0.4 myr—early Late Pliocene) and portray the floodplain and valley of a small creek within a region dominated by a coniferous forest richer in gen…

  • The Governing Classes

    John T Matthews, John Matthews•CHAPTER•Western aristocracies and…•1990

To one visitor to Rome in the 380s, a gentleman officer and historian from Syrian Antioch, the tastes and behaviour of its upper-class residents presented a memorably unfavourable impression. In a pair of vivid satirical portraits, inserted as digressions into his history, Ammianus Marcellinus depicted the senators as totally unworthy of their traditions and social eminence as, sunk in leisure and frivolity, they devoted themselves to the pursuit…

EVERY political ideology, however inchoate, entails some kind of attitude towards past-if only of reverence or rejection. In antebellum America, history became something of a national preoccupation as generation which had inherited new na…

Postulations on the existence of forest refugia in parts of Beringia during the last glacial have been, in large part, based on ambiguous evidence. Existing data on radiocarbon-dated and identified fossil wood and macrofossils from Alaska and northwest Canada are synthesized here and are augmented by results of palynological studies in an effort to show the persistence of some, and total extinction of other, tree and large shrub species. At the same moment, his wife received the title Augusta, and their little son, Valentinian, became at under two years of age, ‘nobilissimus’. For the moment, the politi…

In returning to his native province at a critical moment of its history, Rutilius Namatianus was about to offer his contribution to the preservation of Roman life in a region battered by invasion, where the political experience of the upper classes had suffered the profound effects of disruption and uncertainty. For Italy also, which had suffered much less than Gaul, his journey offers an approach to the same central question of the continuity of…

From 418 a Roman government now permanently situated at Arles was confronted by a Visigothic kingdom in Aquitania, bound to it by the terms of its settlement there to provide military assistance to the Romans, but at the same time a constant source of uncertainty. For a time, the alliance was preserved by common apprehension of the more unruly barbarian peoples in the lands over the Pyrenees, who were engaged in carving out their territories, dis…

News of the invasion of Gaul by Maximus will have reached Gratian in north Italy in the early summer of 383. In May the court had moved from Milan to Patavium, on its way to Raetia for a campaign against the Alamanni; by 16 June it was at Verona. Dropping the campaign, the emperor must very soon have left for Gaul, to face instead the threat from Maximus. For five days, the armies faced each other, somewhere near Paris; but they never joined batt…
