Differentially private survey research
Survey researchers have long protected respondent privacy via de‐identification (removing names and other directly identifying information) before sharing data. Unfortunately, recent research demonstrates that these procedures fail to protect respondents from intentional re‐identification attacks, a problem that threatens to undermine vast survey enterprises in academia, government, and industry. This is especially a problem in political science …
‘What Am I Going to Do with My Philodendron?’ Looking at a Plant in Desk Set
Desk Set, a 1957 20th Century Fox studio comedy, made with the sponsorship of IBM, charts the relationship between a reference librarian, Bunny Watson, and Richard Sumner, the inventor of a computer which appears to threaten her job. The film displays a thriving philodendron within Bunny’s skyscraper office, illustrating her organic style of thinking, and implicitly inviting us to see the plant in opposition to the computer. The suggestion that t…
Prime ministers, the vote of confidence and the management of coalition terminations between elections
When coalition leaders have powers to call a vote of confidence, they can invoke the threat of government resignation or early elections, and raise other actors’ costs of voting down the government. In this paper, this insight is applied to coalition replacements. The procedure, argued here, allows leaders to reduce their risk of losing office between elections by (i) managing the coalition’s cohesion and (ii) denying parliament the option of rep…
Deep time in Cave of Forgotten Dreams
This essay considers how Werner Herzog’s 3D documentary Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2011) presents the entanglement of human drawing with natural formations of rock in a place where beauty is repeatedly ascribed to both these elements – the spectacular Chauvet Cave in the Ardèche gorge in France. The accumulated marks of activity, both human and geological, are presented in the film through aesthetics of layering associated with ideas of deep time.…
Framing aquatic life
Just as the film frame is always filled with image, regardless of how few objects might inhabit the space of that image, so too the contents of the aquarium extend to meet its edges, to produce what artist filmmaker Phillip Warnell, in an essay accompanying his film Outlandish: Strange Foreign Bodies (2009), describes as ‘the sea with corners’.1 Like the aquarium tank, film imposes a geometric form on what is by nature expansive, amorphous and, p…

Imagination and the Senses: Krzysztof Kieślowski's Trois Couleurs: Blanc
This article considers the role of the spectator's imagination in their engagement with the sensory world of cinema. I argue that the spectator's mental images, far from being overwhelmed by those on the screen, are an important element of a complex interaction with the sensations offered and indicated by the film. I develop these ideas through a reading of Krzysztof Kieślowski's Trois Couleurs: Blanc (1993), in which hairdresser Karol is himself…
The Wisconsin Business Corporation
Business Entrepreneurs, Their Major Functions and Related Tenets
The author of the earliest general treatise on economics, writing in the middle of the eighteenth century, regarded the entrepreneur as a key factor in production. Later economists have in general had the same feeling, though they have not defined the word entrepreneur in precisely the same manner. By some the entrepreneur has been considered to be primarily a risk or uncertainty bearer, by others an innovator, by still others a superintendent or…
