Archaeological and modern whitemouth croaker fish ( Micropogonias furnieri ) of southeastern Brazil: A geochemical proxy for environmental preference
In this study, laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry was used to characterize the growth patterns of otolith of Micropogonias furnieri from southeastern Brazil under the influence of coastal marine upwelling. Archaeological fish sagittae otoliths of M. furnieri recovered from Brazilian shell mounds (5820‒4980 cal BP) were analysed and compared with those of modern specimens. Otolith Sr/Ca analysis indicated that off southeas…
Toward transparent governance of transboundary fisheries: The case of Pacific tuna transshipment
Transparency is one of the most influential themes in global environmental governance, however it has received limited treatment in transboundary fisheries. Transparency is essential to ensure officials are held accountable for the use of public resources and the achievement of environmental objectives, such as sustainable harvest. Here, we use a case study approach to assess transparency in transboundary fisheries governance, evaluating transshi…
Automakers' Short-Run Responses to Changing Gasoline Prices
We provide empirical evidence that automobile manufacturers use cash incentives to offset how gasoline price fluctuations affect the expected fuel expenses of automobile buyers. Regressions based on a database of incentives over 2003 to 2006 suggest that on average, manufacturers offset 40% of the change in relative fuel costs between vehicles due to gasoline price fluctuations. The results highlight that carbon taxes and emissions trading progra…

Housing with Care: Initiatives in Norfolk for older people
The Government has put emphasis on preventing inappropriate admissions to hospital and long‐term care and helping people to live at home. The National Service Framework for Older People focuses on promoting older people's independence and fitting services around people's needs. In this climate Housing with Care is presented as an attractive alternative to residential care, mainly for older people. Such schemes maintain people in complexes of purp…
An International Jurisprudence? The Operation of “Precedent” Across International Tribunals
Amid the proliferation of international judicial and quasi-judicial bodies, worries about the possible fragmentation of international law are increasing. Such fears, however, may be misplaced. A close examination of the jurisprudence of nine international judicial bodies, looking specifically for instances of explicit reference to one another's decisions, shows the practice to be widespread, of variable frequency and covering both procedural and …

Some Aspects of the Name in Culture-History
In tracing the folkways built about the name, much may be learned of the evolution of social institutions and the nature of social forces. Such a study reveals societal development as a lumbering movement unequally advancing throughout the world, retaining often the outworn as survivals and shot through with "inconsistencies" and minor variations form the general movement. The present essay is confined to the simplest or most undeveloped peoples.…
