  • Enhancing belonging within community leisure settings

Darla Fortune, John Lord et al.•ARTICLE•Loisir et Société / Society and…•2021•Citada por: 6•Referências: 5

Experiences of belonging are associated with positive wellbeing. Unfortunately, many individuals in our communities do not experience belonging and are prone to isolation and loneliness. In this paper, we describe five themes that highlight ways to help enhance belonging, particularly for individuals susceptible to exclusion. These themes consist of community spaces that are open, inviting, and accessible; are welcoming; provide opportunities for…

    Open Access•Phil Harding, John Lord•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•2017•Citada por: 1•Referências: 17

This paper describes the discovery of a massive, fan-shaped flint core from West Kennett Farm, near Avebury in Wiltshire, a site that is noted for two Late Neolithic palisaded enclosures. The discovery of the core has renewed focus on three similar artefacts from East Anglia, the importance of which has been overlooked. These cores arguably constitute some of the largest individual pieces of systematically worked flint from Britain. The paper con…

  • Role of Canadian user‐led disability organizations in the non‐profit sector

    Peggy Hutchison, Susan Arai et al.•ARTICLE•Disability & Society•2007•Citada por: 3•Referências: 5

User‐led disability organizations have emerged as an important force in the non‐profit sector. While much is known about the traditional disability organizations that began to proliferate in the 1950s (e.g. National Institute for the Blind), relatively less is known about the user‐led organizations that emerged in the 1970s. Using a collective case study approach, phase 1 was a policy review and key informant interviews with members of user‐led a…

  • Individualised Support and Funding

    John Lord, J R Lord et al.•ARTICLE•Disability & Society•2003•Citada por: 28

The paradigm in disability supports is shifting away from institutional services and professional control towards self-determination and community involvement of people with disabilities. The assumption that the best way to provide disability supports is for government to give money to agencies or services, rather than directly to people with disabilities and their support networks, is being challenged. This article reports on findings and themes…

This paper clarifies the concepts of empowerment and mental health and examines their inter‐ relationships in a qualitative study of psychiatric consumer/survivors participating in three innovative community mental health programmes. Open Access•Gerald Nelson, Geoffrey Nelson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•1998•Citada por: 45•Referências: 36

Participatory action research with self‐help/mutual aid organizations for psychiatric consumer/survivors is reviewed. We begin by tracing the origins of and defining both participatory action research and self‐help/mutual aid. In so doing, the degree of correspondence between the assumptions/values of participatory action research and those of self‐help/mutual aid for psychiatric consumer/survivors is examined. We argue that participatory action …
