  • Land titling and political alternation: Seeds of Mexico's drug war

    Open Access•L E C Sánchez, Luis Sanchez et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2025•References: 54

The Mexican drug war has escalated dramatically since 2007, yet its roots lie in municipal turf wars of the 1990s and early 2000s involving the main drug‐trafficking organizations operating in the country. We trace these turf wars to two concurrent shocks: the weakening of the PRI's long‐standing dominance in local offices, and PROCEDE, the programme that converted PRI‐dominated communal ejidos into individually titled parcels. By transforming un…

  • Democracy and Intensity of Preferences: A Test of Storable Votes and Quadratic Voting on Four California Propositions

Alessandra Casella, Luis Sanchez•ARTICLE•The Journal of Politics•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Can direct democracy overcome the “problem of intensity,” treating everyone equally and yet allowing an intense minority to prevail if, but only if, the majority’s preferences are weak? Storable votes and quadratic voting propose possible solutions. We test their performance in two samples of California residents, using data on four initiatives prepared for the 2016 California ballot. To estimate the probable effects of the two systems, we bootst…

  • Land and territory: Competing spatial modes

    Luis Sánchez-Ayala, Luis Sanchez•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Geography•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 10

This paper explores how coal extraction activities in La Guajira and Cesar, Colombia, are confronting the territorial claims of the local communities with the land claims of the coal companies. I argue that for the communities affected, this is not just a matter of land; it is also a matter of place. The paper introduces the concept of “territorial grabbing” as a way of understanding our spatial surroundings beyond considerations of land tenure, …

  • Navigating the Process of Curriculum Redesign in Sociology: Challenges and Lessons from One Program

    Open Access•Dennis J Downey, Lindsey Trimble O’connor et al.•ARTICLE•Teaching Sociology•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 10

The American Sociological Association has produced a wide range of reports and materials addressing curricular best practices. Collectively, those materials are an invaluable resource for guiding revisions of the sociology major, but they do not address processes for implementing such revisions. In this conversation piece, we describe the steps by which our department implemented a thorough curricular redesign—a process nearing completion after f…

    Open Access•Luis Sánchez Ayala, Luis Sanchez•ARTICLE•Revista de Estudios Sociales•2015•Cited by: 9•References: 7

  • Armed conflict, land grabs and primitive accumulation in Colombia: Micro Processes, Macro Trends and the Puzzles in Between

    Carlos J L Gómez, Luis Sánchez-Ayala et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•2015•Cited by: 29•References: 27

Armed conflict is widely believed to disrupt agricultural production and 'reverse' development, but it may also involve the violent transformation of rural economies from subsistence to commercial agriculture. The case of Las Pavas, an estate in northern Colombia, provides further evidence that armed conflict created opportunities for violent land grabs and the expansion of commercial agriculture in Colombia. However, aggregate data suggest that …

  • Darwin, artificial selection, and poverty: Contemporary implications of a forgotten argument

    Open Access•Luis Fernandez, Luis Sanchez•ARTICLE•Politics and the Life Sciences•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 6

This paper argues that the processes of evolutionary selection are becoming increasingly artificial, a trend that goes against the belief in a purely natural selection process claimed by Darwin's natural selection theory. Artificial selection is mentioned by Darwin, but it was ignored by Social Darwinists, and it is all but absent in neo-Darwinian thinking. This omission results in an underestimation of probable impacts of artificial selection up…

  • Tráfico inducido en México: Contribuciones al debate e implicaciones de política pública / Induced Traffic in Mexico: Contributions to the Debate and Public Policy Implications
