    At dawn on 9 October 1991, the artist Christo saw his i,340 blue umbrellas unfurl over 12 miles in the lush green hills and rice paddies of Ibaraki, Japan. His enormous artwork, The Umbrellas, joint Project for Japan and USA, planned over more than six years, had finally blossomed.
