The Evolution of the Secondary STEM Teacher Workforce's Characteristics and Qualifications in American High‐Need Schools Over Three Decades
Maintaining the teacher workforce in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) has been a perpetual challenge in US public schools' teaching rosters. Prior reports show the supply of new STEM teachers into the profession has declined over time while demand for instruction in STEM fields continues to grow. This paper seeks to document whether and how the STEM teacher workforce in settings that serve higher proportions of students fr…
Uncovering the sources of gender earnings gaps among teachers
Regression-adjusted earnings gaps significantly favor male teachers across all reported income sources, except merit pay. • Supplemental pay for extra school duties shows the largest adjusted gaps of all income sources, and are significantly larger when male teachers work for a male principal. • Women are more likely to report participating in extra duties without compensation. This paper examines teacher earnings to provide empirical evidence on…
Should Gender Gaps Be Incorporated into School Accountability Measures? If So, How
School accountability policies are central to current education reform efforts, and most of these policies prominently focus on race- and income-based achievement gaps. Recently, though, discussion of gender-based achievement gaps in schools has emerged in research and policy discussions, so accounting for gender-based achievement differences in existing accountability policies may be an inevitable next step. In this article, I offer a brief back…
Examining Spillover Effects From Teach For America Corps Members in Miami-Dade County Public Schools
This article examines Teach For America's (TFA) placement strategy in Miami-Dade County Public Schools, in which large numbers of TFA corps members are placed as clusters into a targeted set of disadvantaged schools, to investigate whether the large-scale infusion of TFA corps members into these schools induced broader improvements across the school. Using 6 years of administrative data from the district, we exploit variation in TFA density over …
Blaming Women or Blaming the System? Public Perceptions of Women’s Underrepresentation in Elected Office
While scholars understand some of the reasons for the underrepresentation of women in elected office in the United States, we know almost nothing about what the public sees as the explanation for this reality. We also know relatively little about the degree to which people see women’s underrepresentation as a problem. Drawing on blame attribution theories, we examine whether people believe that there are systematic or individual explanations for …
Is it time to reassess current safety standards for glyphosate-based herbicides
Use of glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) increased ∼100-fold from 1974 to 2014. Additional increases are expected due to widespread emergence of glyphosate-resistant weeds, increased application of GBHs, and preharvest uses of GBHs as desiccants. Current safety assessments rely heavily on studies conducted over 30 years ago. We have considered information on GBH use, exposures, mechanisms of action, toxicity and epidemiology. Human exposures to …
Investigating the Relationship between STEM Learning Principles and Student Achievement in Math and Science
Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) advocates commonly emphasize an interdisciplinary, authentic, project-based, and technology-based approach to learning, though the strength of prior research varies. This study examines the association between a range of classroom activities and academic performance gains in math and science. Using longitudinal data from North Carolina middle school students, estimates of the effect of classroom pr…
Is it Just a Bad Class? Assessing the Long‐term Stability of Estimated Teacher Performance
A number of teacher workforce policies implicitly assume that job performance is a relatively stable attribute within teachers. We use longitudinal data on 5th grade teachers in North Carolina to assess this using value‐added measures ( VAM s) of job performance. We find that there is a permanent component of teacher performance that is stable in teachers over long periods—implying that workforce policies selecting teachers based on VAM s could e…
Race, Gender, and Teacher Testing
Virtually all states require teachers to undergo licensure testing before participation in the public school labor market. This article analyzes the information these tests provide about teacher effectiveness. The authors find that licensure tests have different predicative validity for student achievement by teacher race. They also find that student achievement is impacted by the race/ethnicity match between teachers and their students, with Bla…
