How to model the weather-migration link
A growing body of research investigates how changes in weather shape individual choices about migration, yet highly variable results continue to challenge our understanding of the weather-migration nexus. We use a data-driven approach to identify which weather variables best predicted migration decisions of 54,986 individuals originating in Mexico between 1989 and 2016. Using supervised machine learning, we fit random forests to model migration c…

Contractual Dualism, Market Power and Informality
We develop a search‐theoretic model of contractual dualism in formal and informal labour markets. The model (i) provides the micro‐underpinnings for endogenous determination of employer market power in the formal and informal sectors, (ii) offers a unified and coherent set‐up whereby a host of salient features of developing country labour markets can be explained together and (iii) places for the first time the Stiglerian prescription of the opti…
Turning a Blind Eye
In many countries, non-compliance with minimum wage legislation is widespread and authorities may be seen as having turned a blind eye to legislation they have themselves passed. We show that turning a blind eye can indeed be an equilibrium phenomenon with "ex post" credibility, in a model of minimum wage policy with imperfect competition, imperfect enforcement and imperfect commitment. Since credible enforcement requires costly "ex post" transfe…
The Race to the Bottom, from the Bottom
The dominant perspective in discussions of labour and environmental standards and globalization is that of North–South competition and its impact on Northern standards. This paper presents an alternative perspective, that of South–South competition to export to the North and its impact on Southern standards. It develops a simple model of Southern competition, and demonstrates that whether a Southern race to the bottom is possible depends intricat…

Dynamic Stability and International Trade under Uncertainty
In the presence of output or price uncertainty, the Heckscher‐Ohlin‐Samuelson (H‐O‐S) model with incomplete risk markets has been shown to exhibit a wide range of perverse comparative‐statics responses which contradict the predictions à la Stolper‐Samuelson and Rybczynski, and opens up the possibility of perverse price‐output responses. This paper revisits the question raised by Neary (1978) and examines the dynamic stability properties of an H‐O…
