  • Populist Parties, Female Populist Leaders, and the Gendered Vote in Germany

Open Access•Teresa Haußmann, Aiko Wagner et al.•ARTICLE•Politics and Governance•2026

Studying the relationship between gender and populist voting is challenging because few electoral contexts allow for a direct comparison of relevant populist parties from different ideological camps under shared structural conditions. The 2025 German federal election provides a rare case: two ideologically distinct populist parties, both led by prominent female leaders, competed nationally. Alice Weidel headed the radical-right AfD, while Sahra W…

  • Worth the Risk? Mass Obstruction, Vigilantism, and Public Support for Climate Activists

Open Access•Philippe Joly, Aiko Wagner et al.•ARTICLE•European Political Science Review•2025•References: 17

This study examines the influence of mass obstruction tactics within the new climate movement on public support for activists and their goals. Using a survey experiment that manipulates different protest scenarios, we analyze the impact of obstructive protests with and without vigilante intervention on public opinion. Our results suggest that while obstructive tactics are perceived negatively by the public, they do not significantly affect suppor…

  • Fighting for a Lost Cause? Availability of Populist Radical Right Voters for Established Parties. The Case of Germany

    Marcel Lewandowsky, Aiko Wagner•ARTICLE•Representation•2023•Cited by: 9•References: 62

This study examines the availability of populist radical right voters for mainstream parties. Are there segments within the electorate of PRRPs that can be regained by (specific) established non-populist parties? Focusing on the German context, the paper analyzes the availability of AfD voters on the electoral market. We demonstrate that relatively low availability can be traced back to the voters' distance in issue positions, the strength of pop…

  • Party System Change in Eastern and Western Germany Between Convergence and Dissimilarity

    Open Access•Aiko Wagner•ARTICLE•German Politics•2023•Cited by: 5•References: 37

This paper compares the evolution of critical characteristics of the party systems in Eastern and Western Germany since unification. While the institutionalisation hypothesis implies that the party system in Eastern Germany should adjust towards its Western German counterpart, the ongoing dealignment suggests a loosening of party-voter-linkages and, ultimately, non-institutionalisation in Eastern Germany and party system de-institutionalisation i…

  • Germany Going Postal? Comparing Postal and Election Day Voters in the 2017 German Federal Election

    Open Access•Aiko Wagner, Josephine Lichteblau•ARTICLE•German Politics•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 27

The proportion of voters casting their votes by mail days or even weeks before election day has risen from initially five per cent to nearly thirty per cent in the 2017 German federal election. At the same time, the differences in election results between postal and election day voters are increasing, reaching a record at the Bundestag election in 2017. Against this background, it seems particularly surprising that there are only a small number o…

  • Becoming part of the gang? Established and nonestablished populist parties and the role of external efficacy

    Open Access•Werner Krause, Aiko Wagner•ARTICLE•Party Politics•2021•Cited by: 40•References: 46

In this article, we examine the extent to which the influence of external efficacy on support for populist parties is conditional on the degree to which a populist party is an established player in a given party system. We do so using a two-step regression approach that allows us to investigate the varying effect of external efficacy in a multilevel setting. Making use of data on 23 European Union member states, we empirically demonstrate that th…

  • Contrasting First- and Second-Order Electoral Behaviour: Determinants of Individual Party Choice in European and German Federal Elections

    Heiko Giebler, Aiko Wagner•ARTICLE•German Politics•2015•Cited by: 14•References: 18

In contrast to national elections, both parties and voters are assumed to think that ‘less is at stake’ in European elections: Campaigns are less intense, turnout is lower, and citizens are more inclined to ‘vote with their hearts’. The latter should be reflected in differing rationales of voting – party choice should not be based on identical determinants in national and European elections. However, this hypothesis has not been sufficiently test…
