  • Attrition from Administrative Data: Problems and Solutions with an Application to Postsecondary Education

Andrew Foote, Kevin Stange•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2026

This paper documents the bias introduced by attrition of individuals from administrative data with an application to the labor market consequences of postsecondary education. Attrition due to crossstate migration is non-trivial, particularly for high-earners, graduates from selective universities, and certain majors. Consequently, the premium associated with graduating from a most selective university is 23% higher than in-state earnings suggests…

  • Virtual fences are not more stressful than conventional electric fences in rotationally stocked beef cattle

Open Access•Jancy Jeffus, Kevin Wagner et al.•ARTICLE•Rangelands•2025

Virtual fence (VF) technology is rapidly developing and being adopted, but many ranchers and consumers have questions about its effect on the welfare of range beef cattle. • We conducted two studies using either VF collars or conventional electric fencing to rotationally graze beef cattle. We measured several common physiological and behavioral indicators of stress and correlated these indicators with the number of electric stimuli received from …

  • It’s a Hard-Knock Life: Child Labor Practices and Compliance with IMF Agreements

    Open Access•Skip Mark, Huei-Jyun Ye et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2021•References: 29

How does IMF lending impact child labor? We argue that, as compliance with IMF reforms increases, child labor increases. IMF loans can help governments avoid bankruptcy, prevent debt defaults, and credibly signal a commitment to pro-market reforms which should generate trade and investment. However, IMF policies associated with revenue and social policies can have negative impacts on child labor. Education reforms undermine the quality of schooli…

  • Locate Your Nearest Exit: Mass Layoffs and Local Labor Market Response

Open Access•Andrew Foote, Michel Grosz et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 41

Large shocks to local labor markets can cause long-lasting changes to employment, unemployment, and the local labor force. This study examines the relationship between mass layoffs and the long-run size of the local labor force. The authors consider four main channels through which the local labor force may adjust: in-migration, out-migration, retirement, and disability insurance enrollment. These channels, primarily out-migration, account for mo…

  • The Effect of Lower Transaction Costs on Social Security Disability Insurance Application Rates and Participation

Open Access•Andrew Foote, Michel Grosz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 3

Transaction costs pose significant barriers to participation in public programs. We analyze how Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) application behavior was affected by iClaim, a 2009 innovation that streamlined the online application process. We use a difference-in-differences design to compare application rates before and after 2009 across counties with varying degrees of access to high-speed internet. We estimate that counties with int…

  • Decomposing the Effect of Crime on Population Changes

    Open Access•Andrew Foote•ARTICLE•Demography•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 17

This article estimates the effect of crime on migration rates for counties in U.S. metropolitan areas and makes three contributions to the literature. First, I use administrative data on migration flows between counties, which gives me more precise estimates of population changes than data used in previous studies. Second, I am able to decompose net population changes into gross migration flows in order to identify how individuals respond to crim…
