    Open Access•José Carlos G Aguiar•ARTICLE•Encartes•2019•References: 18

  • Cities on edge: Smuggling and neoliberal policies at the Iguazú triangle

    Open Access•José Carlos G Aguiar•ARTICLE•Singapore Journal of Tropical…•2012

The vision of a borderless world, of people, ideas and products freely circulating within a self‐regulating market, is one that clashes with the emerging legal regime based on the punitive force of the state. After a period of liberalization, seen in the opening of national economies and the promotion of regional trade projects and free‐trade zones, the ambivalence of neoliberalism is manifest in a borderless capitalism that ambiguously depends o…

In the rise of democratic governments across Latin America, the neoliberal law-and-order perspective has been the most influential model of security in the region. This approach is based on the opposition between state and illegal agents, as if they were two different sets of actors. Influenced by this model, Mexican president Vicente Fox launched an extensive anti-piracy programme to eradicate retail of counterfeit. Based on ethnographic materia…
