Yucatec Maya Organizations in San Francisco, California: Ethnic Identity Formation Across Migrant Generations
Using results of field research among Yucatec Maya in San Francisco, we compare two types of migrant associations: hometown associations (HTAs) and social service agencies, specifically in terms of the use and expression of ethnic identity. We argue that HTA leaders rely on a regional identity based largely on a sense of shared culture, which reproduces the dominant and widespread view of ethnic identity in Yucatán, namely that the Maya are not a…
Ethnic Mobilization among the Maya of Yucatán
While the literature on indigenous political mobilization in Latin America is now quite extensive, relatively little has been published on why ethnic mobilization has not occurred in some indigenous regions. In this article, I examine a case where there is very little mobilization and organization around ethnic identity: Yucatán, Mexico. I begin with a political history of Yucatán, comparing it with and contrasting it to Chiapas. I then argue tha…

Mayan Lives, Mayan Utopias: The Indigenous Peoples of Chiapas and the Zapatista Rebellion
The dramatic January 1, 1994, emergence of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) in Chiapas, Mexico, brought the state's indigenous peoples to the attention of the international community. Yet indigenous peoples in Chiapas had been politically active and organized for years prior to the uprising. This compelling volume examines in detail these local and regional histories of power and resistance, powerfully bolstered by gripping and he…
Regional Renegotiations of Space: Tojolabal Ethnic Identity in Las Margaritas, Chiapas
In recent years, Indians of different ethnicities in Chiapas have come together in regional and national forums around a sense of shared Indian identity. Calls for Indian unity at these forums are based on common experiences of discrimination, lack of representation and power in the national political system, and the absence of government services in indigenous regions, as well as on the shared practice of communal work and similar decision-makin…
