  • The Hardening of the American Landscape

Brian Muller, Stefania Mitova•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Planning…•2024

Problem, research strategy, and findings Patterns of change in urban surfaces have implications for equity, health, and environmental quality in future cities and for their adaptability to climate change. Relatively little detailed research has been done on the role of land use policies—particularly the recent generation of infill and climate adaptation policies—in shaping urban surfaces and related environmental systems. I used a novel approach …

  • Impacts of form and design policies on urban microclimate

Open Access•Mehdi P Heris, Ariane Middel et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape and Urban Planning•2020

  • Why Does Planning Matter in Microclimate Management and Urban Heat Mitigation

Open Access•Mehdi P Heris, Brian Muller et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Planning Education and…•2019•References: 9

In this paper, we examine two mixed-use redevelopment projects in the United States, including both regulatory and procedural contexts, to assess how decision-making processes affected microclimate outcomes. We investigate Belmar in Lakewood, CO and 29th Street Mall in Boulder, CO. Measurements and simulations of microclimate show that Belmar mitigates urban heat more effectively. Policies including building height, street patterns, and landscapi…

  • The Role of Social Media in Green Infrastructure Planning

Nader Afzalan, Brian Muller•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Technology•2014

This paper explores the role of social media in facilitating green infrastructure planning through supporting discourses among online participants. Building on the communicative rationality theory, it adopts interpretive discourse analysis to explore ways in which online participants of a neighborhood online forum in Eugene, Oregon were able to assess and clarify the validity of each other's claims while discussing the location of a new park. The…

  • Governing Wildfire Risks

    Open Access•Brian Muller, Stacey Schulte•ARTICLE•Journal of Planning Education and…•2011•Cited by: 6•References: 6

Land use policies and programs offer a diverse set of strategies for management of wildfire risk. Many county governments have only recently begun to implement such strategies, and relatively little research has been conducted on county activity in wildfire risk reduction such as hazard assessment, plan making, regulation of land use, and subdivision design. Based on a questionnaire survey, the authors explore influences over choice of risk reduc…

  • The Dynamics of Land Development in Resort Communities

Open Access•Brian Muller, Li Yin et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2008•References: 31

Over the past thirty years, recreation communities in many parts of the globe have gone through cycles of diversification and integration into complex recreation regions. As resort communities mature, they face increasing pressures on scarce recreational resources, demands for economic diversification, and changing attitudes toward tourism on the part of local residents. A variety of land-use management practices and economic development initiati…

  • Impacts of Rapid Urban Growth on Farmland Conversion

    Open Access•Ted K Bradshaw, Brian Muller•ARTICLE•Rural Sociology•1998•Cited by: 8•References: 12

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) computer mapping programs and new land use policy models are shown to be useful in understanding the dynamics of rural land conversion to urban uses. The California Central Valley Alternative Futures Model was constructed to evaluate patterns of growth that are forecasted to triple the population of the California Central Valley by 2040. The GIS sub-divided the Valley into over 750,000 land units, and a logi…
