Beyond GPA
This study quantitatively evaluated the theoretical model of academic success proposed by York et al. This model proposes that six interacting domains contribute to the broad concept of academic success in tertiary education. These domains include academic achievement, course satisfaction, perceptions of career success, acquisition of skills and competencies, persistence, and attainment of learning outcomes. A sample of 1127 students at an Austra…
Holocene tephras in the New Guinea highlands
In the highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG), tephras are key chronostratigraphic markers for archaeological and palaeoenvironmental studies. Here, mid-Late-Holocene tephras are geochemically fingerprinted and correlated across seventeen sites in PNG. This enables the first regional scale assessment of the distribution of these tephras, with implications for both assessing eruption magnitude and interpreting site stratigraphy. In the past, stratigr…
Medical student wellbeing during Covid-19
This study used a novel methodology to elicit medical students' reflections on their mental wellbeing during COVID-19. Our findings reinforce and extend the 'coping reservoir' model, increasing our understanding of factors that contribute to resilience or burnout. Many stressors that medical students typically face were exacerbated during COVID-19, and their access to coping strategies and support were restricted. The changes to relationships wit…

The Era of Global Transition

Pleistocene colonisation of the Bismarck Archipelago
The geological and archaeological signatures at the site of Kupona na Dari on the Willaumez Peninsula, West New Britain provide important new data about human colonisation of the Bismarck Archipelago. Analyses of the stratigraphy and weathering of paleosols and manuports, when combined with fission track, radiocarbon, and luminescence dating, indicate that the site was first occupied at about 35–45,000 years ago. During the whole period of occupa…

A Pleistocene Landscape in West New Britain, Png
Holocene volcanic activity has created a well-preserved stratigraphic series of prehistoric landscapes in West New Britain, PNG which have enabled the interpretation of changing patterns of land use (e.g. Specht et al. 1991 ; Pavlides 1993; Torrence et al. in press). Recent fieldwork on Numundo Plantation has extended this remarkable record to include five superimposed Pleistocene surfaces each sealed beneath a volcanic tephra. This older landsca…
