    Open Access•Huw C W L Williams, Dirk Van Vliet et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2001•Cited by: 2•References: 8

In conjunction with the equilibrium model and reference states developed in paper 1 we examine, over the period 2000 - 20, the effect of new roads and highway capacity changes, applied with and without road pricing, on vehicle emissions and economic (user) benefits. In particular, we quantify the elasticity effects on these outputs. By unifying the treatment of emission and economic benefits, we have confirmed that those conclusions of the 1994 r…

  • The Contribution of Suppressed and Induced Traffic in Highway Appraisal, Part 1: Reference States

    Open Access•Huw C W L Williams, Dirk Van Vliet et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2001•Cited by: 3•References: 9

In this paper and its sequel we investigate the contribution of suppressed and induced traffic to emissions and user benefits derived from new roads and capacity changes under different pricing regimes. Equilibrium transport models are used to appraise selected highway and pricing policies over the period 2000-20. Here we examine the suppression of demand through increasing congestion in two reference states against which capacity changes will be…

To this end, a brief historical background with respect to the development of industrial parks is reviewed. In order to disperse population and industries concentrated in the Capital R…

  • Form Follows Function: Reformulating Urban Population Density Functions

    Open Access•Michael Batty, Kwang Sik Kim•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•1992•Cited by: 16•References: 30

In this paper, we argue that the most appropriate form for urban population density models is the inverse power function, contrary to conventional practice, which is largely based upon the negative exponential. We first show that the inverse power function has several theoretical properties which have hitherto gone unremarked in the literature. Our main argument, however, is based on the notion that a density function should describe the extent t…
