The British Missionary Enterprise since 1700
The history of modern Christian missionary work has only comparatively recently emerged from historiographical obscurity, where it once lingered as an outpost of ecclesiastical history or as a hagiographical genre for popular consumption and edification. A major reason for this change has been awareness of the value of the voluminous collections of mission archives in Europe, Britain and North America to historians of empire. They offer profound …
Shameful Flight: The Last Years of the British Empire in India
Stanley Wolpert has had a long career in Indian history, starting with his first book, Morley and India, 1906–1910 (U. of California P., 1967), which many would still consider his best. After that he ranged far and wide with a useful general history of India (now in its seventh edition), forays into the lives of Gandhi, Nehru and Jinnah, and a study of the 1919 shooting at Amritsar. In this book he takes the years 1942–8 and, as the title indicat…
From The Colonial to the Postcolonial: India and Pakistan in Transition
This collection of essays originated in a conference at the University of Chicago in 2005, held in memory of Bernard S. Cohn (1928–2003), anthropologist and historian, and one of the great pioneers of the modern study of South Asian history and society. Its main concern, apart from celebrating Cohn's seminal intellectual contributions, is to interrogate the notion that 1947, for all its drama, violence and mythic dimensions, was a critical dividi…
State, Community and Neighbourhood in Princely North India, c.1900-1950
This book lies at the intersection of two streams of historiography relating to India before and after independence from British rule in 1947. One is the growing interest in the third of India under princely rule rather than direct British control, which has for decades received less attention, in part because of the emphasis understandably laid on the politics of nationalism and struggle for the future of India between the British, the Congress …
Pyrolysis-combustion 14 C dating of soil organic matter
Radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating of total soil organic matter (SOM) often yields results inconsistent with the stratigraphic sequence. The onerous chemical extractions for SOM fractions do not always produce satisfactory 14 C dates. In an effort to develop an alternative method, the pyrolysis-combustion technique was investigated to partition SOM into pyrolysis volatile (Py-V) and pyrolysis residue (Py-R) fractions. The Py-V fractions obtained from a t…

Risk communication: Some underlying principles
Attention is drawn to the need to provide information to the public about environmentally hazardous or intrusive facilities. It is suggested that given the increasing disputatious nature of environmental decision making and growing environmental sensitivity, planners and policy makers are recognising that specialist knowledge is required to design and evaluate the effectiveness of risk communications The paper describes the context within which s…
The Structure of Motives for Moving: A Multidimensional Model of Residential Mobility
A three-dimensional conceptual model of residential mobility for owner-occupiers is proposed using the methods of facet theory (after Guttman). Three conceptual dimensions (facets) of buyers' reasons for moving are defined, based on the contribution of job-related motives, family-related motives and housing values. The conceptual model is tested by a multivariate statistical analysis (smallest space analysis) of a national sample of 1052 house pu…
