  • The political: A view from Jakarta's kampungs

    Open Access•Prathiwi Widyatmi Putri•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2024•References: 32

This article is a response to Leitner and Sheppard's recent publications on Jakarta. I argue that Jakarta's kampungs and the eviction of their communities is a topic that needs to be situated in the realm of social reproduction. The multidimensional problems in kampungs fall within capitalism's wider 'crisis of care'. From this methodological position, we can access the political domain of the kampung, from which a new political agency emerges as…

  • Insurgent planner: Transgressing the technocratic state of postcolonial Jakarta

    Open Access•Prathiwi Widyatmi Putri•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 58

In Jakarta, Ciliwung Merdeka represents a collective body of emergent insurgent planning that has endured throughout the current neoliberal era and the authoritarian regime that preceded it. Within a movement tradition that recalls the Freirean influence on Indonesian societal transformation, the organisation challenges the technocratic state and its ‘rational planning’ ideology. Insurgent planning engages with society at large, laying claim to a…

  • Social Innovation as Political Transformation: Thoughts for a Better World

Prathiwi Widyatmi Putri, Pieter Van Den Broeck et al.•BOOK•Social Innovation as Political…•2019

This book is an introduction to the works of a collective of academics on social innovation and socio-political transformation. It offers a critique of the dominance of market-based logics and extractivism in the age of neoliberalism. Calling for systemic change, the authors invite the reader to engage in the analysis and practice of socially innovative initiatives and, by doing so, contribute to the co-construction of a sustainable, solidarity-b…

    Open Access•Prathiwi Widyatmi Putri, Frank Moulaert•ARTICLE•International Journal of Urban…•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 38

This article examines the spatial practices and forms of institutionalization in the water and water sanitation sector in Jakarta, capital of Indonesia, and especially in Kampung Kojan in the Kalideres subdistrict of Jakarta. To this end, it develops a three-layered analytical framework viewing the city as a multi-scalar socio-ecological system in which different forms of human-water relations and their institutionalization are found. Particular …
