On the Geometry of Emergency Service Medical Provision in Cities
The enormity of many cities today poses special problems for authorities supplying emergency medical services. The scale of the emergency system and variations in the operating conditions rule out some of the traditional methods developed to deal with the complexities involved. In cities the provision of services is affected not only by the daily varying locations of the populations at risk, but also by the prevailing traffic and weather conditio…
A Reasonable Theory of Migration
This paper is concerned with the development of an explanation of the phenomenon of migration. We recognize the existence of qualitative differences between individuals in terms of their reasons for migrating. The differences have implications for the pursuit of the explanatory strategy which we outline in the first section. In the subsequent three sections alternative methods of analysis are critically examined and an appropriate method selected…
Urban Fields
Urban Spatial Interaction
This paper centres on the development of a geometrical representation of movement and spatial interaction in urban areas, as distinct from the network representation commonly used in modern studies. All quantities are treated as distributions over geographic space, rather than concentrations at nodes of a network. We present a continuous model of spatial interaction and calibrate it for Greater Manchester. The model is a trip distribution model w…
Urban Velocity Fields
The city is not an undifferentiated terrain and travel does not occur along straight-line paths at constant velocities. Variations in travel velocities at different locations bend the minimum time paths away from regions of high congestion. This paper discusses a transformation of the urban plane into a time surface on which distance corresponds to travel time, and describes the construction of minimum paths and isochrones for various velocity fi…
The Calibration of Trip Distribution Models
In this paper, model calibration is considered in terms of the evidence supplied by a survey to substantiate the distributional hypothesis implied by the model. By means of Bayes theorem, an evidence test is derived which is applicable to trip-distribution models. The test produces a set of constraint equations to determine optimal values for the model parameters. Section 6 determines the constraint equations necessary to calibrate some commonly …
