  • International trade and Covid‐19

Open Access•Jiansuo Pei, Gaaitzen J De Vries et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Regional Science•2022

This paper examines the impact of Covid‐19 lockdowns on exports by Chinese cities. We use city‐level export data at a monthly frequency from January 2018 through April 2020. Differences‐in‐differences estimates suggest cities in lockdown experienced a ceteris paribus 34 percentage points reduction in the year‐on‐year growth rate of exports. The lockdown impacted the intensive and extensive margin, with higher exit and lower new entry into foreign…

  • Are exporters more environmentally friendly? A re‐appraisal that uses China’s micro‐data

Open Access•Jiansuo Pei, Bodo Sturm et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2021

Is a firm's ability to export an important determinant of environmental performance? To answer this question, we construct a unique microdata set that merged two rich manufacturing firm‐level data sets for China for 2007. When combining this new data set with well‐received empirical specifications, we found that both export status and export intensity are associated with lower sulphur dioxide (SO 2 ) emissions intensity. In addition to the tradit…

  • Accounting for China's Import Growth

Open Access•Jiansuo Pei, Erik Dietzenbacher et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 31

This paper applies structural decomposition analysis to Chinese input-output tables in order to disentangle and quantify the sources of China's import growth and China's growth in vertical specialization: that is, China's incorporation into the global supply chain. China's exports and the role of processing trade therein have increased substantially in the last decade. Yet, they account for only one third of China's import growth from 1997 to 200…
