  • Defining left behind places

Open Access•Flavio Comim, Maria Abreu et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2023•References: 22

There is considerable debate in the literature as to the precise definition of ‘left-behind’ places, and the appropriate metrics for identifying them, and for successfully targeting regional policy interventions. We propose an evaluation structure for ‘left-behindness’ based on Amartya Sen’s capability approach, and argue that the diversity of criteria should not be seen as a shortcoming, but rather as a richness to be explored. We show, through …

  • A capability-approach perspective on regional development

    Open Access•Maria Abreu, Flavio Comim et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 12

We argue for a broader and more deliberative regional policy-making process that can be used to better identify the needs of diverse left-behind communities and develop appropriate policies. We argue that the capability approach’s quintessentially inclusive and broad scope, and focus on real opportunities, agency, and process might better address the challenges of regional development. We use these insights to lay out a practical guide for how th…

  • Disentangling the Brexit vote

    Open Access•Maria Abreu, Özge Öner•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 44

A large number of studies have analysed the role of individual and geographical determinants of voting behaviour in the context of the recent EU referendum in the UK, but several questions remain. A key unresolved issue is the extent of the interaction between individual voter characteristics and the geographical context in which they live, with some of the variance in voter preferences previously attributed to individual characteristics potentia…

  • Republicanismo, Feminismo E Desigualdade

  • Entrepreneurial practices in research-intensive and teaching-led universities

Open Access•Maria Abreu, Pelin Demirel et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2016

In recent years, there has been increased pressure on universities to deliver on their third mission. In the UK context, universities are encouraged to explicitly assume responsibility for facilitating economic growth, with a particular emphasis being given to the role played by the research-led institutions. Using a broad definition of entrepreneurial practices in universities, the aim of this paper was to extend the analysis of entrepreneurial …

  • Academic Entrepreneurship in the Creative Arts

Open Access•Maria Abreu, Vadim Grinevich•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning C…•2014

The extensive literature on academic entrepreneurship has focused almost entirely on science and engineering, while little is known about the extent of it in other disciplines, most notably the creative arts. We analyse the context, motivations, and variety of academic entrepreneurship in the creative arts using a recently completed survey of UK academics, providing microdata on 1108 academics. The data are complemented using institutional data t…

  • Migration and inter-industry mobility of UK graduates

Maria Abreu, Alessandra Faggian et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2014•Cited by: 11•References: 12

New university graduates are highly geographically mobile, but, as the literature has shown, often struggle in the labour market, working in non-graduate level jobs or in a field different from the one for which they are qualified. In this context, inter-industry moves can act as complements or substitutes for geographical moves, with graduates reacting to job mismatches by either changing location, industry, or both. Self-selection is also likel…
