Sinclair, John
John McHardy Sinclair (June 14, 1933–March 13, 2007) made major contributions to three related areas of applied linguistics: language in education, discourse analysis, and corpus lexicography.
Impacts of Privatization of Customary Land Rights in Z ambia: A Comparative Study of Rural and Peri‐urban Locations
In its quest for development, Z ambia is pursuing a land policy that facilitates privatization of customary land. This article investigates the effects of privatization in terms of how it shapes people's behaviour and perception of private tenure and related tenure dynamics. Findings have shown that the appetite to privatize land is growing stronger in peri‐urban areas as land becomes more scarce. Furthermore, privatization of land appears to be …
Corpus Linguistics: Overview
Corpus linguistics means the use of computer‐assisted methods to study large quantities of real language. Such research is important for applied linguists because they investigate questions about actual language use. Due to advances in technology, researchers can discover new facts and test hypotheses about aspects of language which were not previously accessible to empirical observation. These include the frequencies of linguistic patterns as la…
Participatory Approaches to Land Policy Reform in Zambia: Potentials and Challenges
The subject of participation is now at the core of many contemporary development debates. This is promoted within the emerging context of moving away from 'government' to 'governance' as stakeholders are increasingly getting frustrated by governments' continued application of the mundane Decide, Announce, and Defend (DAD) approaches to policy making. However, despite the voluminous amount of literature on participation, there is little scholarly …

Natural Green Space and Planning Policy: Devising a Model for its Delivery in Regional Spatial Strategies
Provision of natural green space within the broader umbrella of green infrastructure is now a matter of increasing importance to policy makers and decision takers in the land-use planning system. This paper examines the evolution of this new policy area. Reference is made to research studies dealing with attitudes to such spaces and consideration is given to the ‘quality of life’ agenda when addressing both growth and regeneration strategies. A m…
Heritage-sustainability: Developing a methodology for the sustainable appraisal of the historic environment
The application of sustainable development principles to town planning is by no means a new concept. Yet, relatively little has been written on the links between sustainability and the historic env

Two quantitative methods of studying phraseology in English
Word frequency lists are a standard resource for many theoretical, descriptive and applied questions. However, due to severe problems of definition, there are no equivalent lists which give the frequency of phrases. This paper proposes two independent methods of studying the frequent phraseology of English. First, using a data-base of the most frequent collocations between word-forms in a 200-million word corpus, the strength of attraction betwee…

The Role of Mediation in the Settlement of Planning Disputes at Appeal: The Debate and Research Agenda
Mediation has now been canvassed for use in the settlement of planning disputes. But does mediation have a role to play here? In the literature on alternative dispute resolution some authors have argued that there are general rules for deciding which types of dispute would be suitable for mediation and which would not. The rule of 'presumptive mediation' has been advocated; that as long as certain conditions are satisfied, mediation should be the…

Collocations and semantic profiles: On the cause of the trouble with quantitative studies
Current work on lexical collocations uses two ideas: (i) words have distinctive semantic profiles or "prosodies"; and (ii) the strength of association between words can be measured in quantitative terms. These ideas can be combined to provide comparative semantic profiles of words, which show the frequent and characteristic collocates of node words, and make explicit the semantic relations between the collocates. Using data from corpora of up to …
