Home futures
House biographies tend to focus on buildings' pasts. By comparison, this article develops a house biography of futures for a modernist high-rise estate, the Aylesbury Estate in London. It argues that a house biography of futures explores the multiple futures of house, building, estate and the built environment. To provide the biography the fieldwork involved archival research, oral history interviews and home tours, semi structured in-depth inter…

The 2017 RGS‐IBG chair's theme
The theme for the chair's plenaries at the 2017 Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) ( RGS ‐ IBG ) Annual Conference is ‘Decolonising geographical knowledges: opening geography out to the world’. This commentary explains why this pursuit of critical consciousness via decolonial thinking could do more harm than good. We show how the emphasis on decolonising geographical knowledges rather than structures, instituti…
The High-Rise Home
This article investigates the relationship between verticality and home. It develops the idea of 'verticality as practice'. This appreciates verticality not as something that takes place in three-dimensional landscapes, but as the outcome of everyday practical activity. Examining a modernist high-rise estate, the Aylesbury Estate in London, the article identifies and examines a range of vertical practices, illustrating how they are intertwined wi…

Humanizing the Laws of War
A celebration of the scholarship of Richard Baxter, former Judge of the International Court of Justice and former Professor of International Law at Harvard Law School. The volume brings together Professor Baxter's writings on the laws of war, on which he was one of the most influential scholars of the twentieth century. His work remains timely and relevant to today's issues, and offers many analyses which have been borne out in subsequent years. …

Of due Obedience to Rulers, and of Resistance
Thes. 317. It is the Command of God the universal Soveraign, that every soul be subject to the higher Powers, and resist them not; and this not only for fear of punishment, but for conscience sake, Rom. 13.1 to 7; Tit. 3.1; 1; Pet. 2. 13,14,15. Because the right understanding of these commands of God, is of great use for our guidance in these weighty points, I shall stay a while upon the search of that Rom. 13 which saith most; and if we understa…
Of the Administration of the Universal Kingdom
Having spoken of the CONSTITUTION of the Kingdom of God, I shall proceed to speak of the ADMINISTRATION thereof. Thes. 35. God as the Soveraign Ruler of mankind hath given him the Law of nature, commonly called the Morall Law, to be the Rule of his obedience. 1. The Law of nature in the primary most proper sence, is to be found in natura rerum , in the whole Creation that is objected to our Knowledg, as it is a Glass in which we may see the Lord,…
A 'building event' of fear
This paper examines an incidence of fear that a resident experienced in a council tower block in inner London. Thinking through this 'building event', the paper returns to earlier work that called for a move towards 'a critical geography of architecture' and draws on the work in so-called new geographies of architecture over the past decade. A series of arguments related to the human experience of buildings is made. Latourian actor network theory…
A Holy Commonwealth
A Holy Commonwealth was written in 1659 by the Puritan minister Richard Baxter (1615–91), and proved to be the most controversial of all his works. He publicly repudiated it in 1670, and in 1683 the Oxford University authorities ordered it to be part of a book-burning that included the works of Hobbes and Milton. The scandal that surrounded it has obscured its merits as the most candid of confessions as to why a conservative Puritan fought for Pa…

The measurement of relative accessibility
Baxter R. S. and Lenzi G. (1974) The measurement of relative accessibility, Reg. Studies 9, 15–26. The measurement of physical separation between the zones of a sub-divided study area is a common necessity in regional analysis. It is obligatory when the concept of accessibility is intrinsic to the analysis and on these occasions distance is commonly used as the unit of physical separation. Whilst an air line distance matrix might prove suitable a…
