At One End of the Endless Universe”: Akira Nishimura’s Interview with Isang Yun
Their conversation explores the social, cultural, and philosophical contexts for Yun's compositional decisions. As a Korean native composer exiled in Germany, Yun was directly impacted by the Cold War politics while also living through the early days of globalization.Yun's Hauptton technique could be understood as his response to the high-modernist trend of the 1950s and 60s Germany, in particular, dodecaphony and avant-garde experimentalism. The r…
The Dynamics of Land Rents in Housing Submarkets: A Marxian Perspective
This theoretical study delves into the dynamics of housing submarkets with the framework of Marxian land rents. It examines the relationship between residential spaces and the reproduction of labour power in terms of commuting and the differentiated quality of reproduction by submarket. This study shows that the differentiation process of venturing to create distinct spaces for surplus profit and the emulation process of copycatting spaces of hig…
Smart city, eco city, world city, creative city, et cetera et cetera: A Marxian interpretation of urban discourses’ short lifecycles
Concepts like ‘creative city’, ‘world city’ and ‘eco city’ arrive with loud celebration, but fade in just a few years. In recent years, ‘smart city’ has been a buzzword. As each fad emerges, urbanists debate its meaning and implications. However, why so many urban concepts circulate at all is rarely focused on. This study attempts to answer this question based on the Marxian view of the built environment as a fixed capital. We focus on the differ…
Analyzing Schoenberg’s War Compositions as Satire and Sincerity: A Comparative Analysis of Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte and A Survivor from Warsaw
This paper presents a comparative analysis of Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte op. 41 (1942) and A Survivor from Warsaw op. 46 (1947) to show that Schoenberg’s compositional decisions for each piece reflect the public’s (and his) change of attitude regarding the historical events surrounding World War II. In particular, I argue that Ode frequently features humorous depiction of the Nazi regime through various types of musical satire whereas Survivor ’s…
Land Rent Theory Revisited
In explaining the causes of the global economic crisis that was ignited by the bubble bust in the housing market in 2008, mainstream economics hardly provides any fundamental explanation for the fluctuation of house prices, other than criticizing the operation of the financial markets. Although land rent lies at the center of the fundamental mechanisms underlying the movement of house prices, little attention has been paid to it. Land rent theory…
The Division of Spatial Housing Submarkets: A Theory and the Case of Seoul
This study suggests a basis for the division of spatial housing submarkets in enhancing the understanding of housing markets. The theoretical background of the division is based upon the relationship between commuting patterns and the structure of house prices. An examination of the process of 'expansion-overlap-merging' between residential spheres, defined as a unit consisting of a centre of employment and the surrounding residential area, provi…
