Using multiple hybrid spatial design network analysis to predict longitudinal effect of a major city centre redevelopment on pedestrian flows
Predicting how changes to the urban environment layout will affect the spatial distribution of pedestrian flows is important for environmental, social and economic sustainability. We present longitudinal evaluation of a model of the effect of urban environmental layout change in a city centre (Cardiff 2007–2010), on pedestrian flows. Our model can be classed as regression based direct demand using Multiple Hybrid Spatial Design Network Analysis (…

Impact of neighbourhood food environment on food consumption in children aged 9–10 years in the UK SPEEDY (Sport, Physical Activity and Eating behaviour: (Environmental Determinants in Young people) s…
Objective Poor diet in childhood increases risk of obesity but the relationship between access to food and children’s food choice is underexplored. We determined relationships between distance to and density of food outlets on children’s food choice. Design Children ( n 1721) aged 9–10 years who participated in a cross-sectional study from a sample of state and private schools across urban and rural areas. Food consumption was reported using a sh…
Physical activity and dietary behaviour in a population-based sample of British 10-year old children: The SPEEDY study (Sport, Physical activity and Eating behaviour: Environmental Determinants in You…
Results indicate that almost 70% of children meet national PA guidelines, indicating that a prevention of decline, rather than increasing physical activity levels, might be an appropriate intervention target. Promotion of daily fruit and vegetable intake in this age group is also warranted, possibly focussing on children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds

Self-Reported Mental Health-Related Quality of Life and Mortality in Men and Women in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (Epic-Norfolk): A Prospective Population Study
Objective: To explore the relationship between self-reported mental functional health and mortality. Methods: Participants included 17,777 men and women aged 40 to 79 years at baseline who lived in Norfolk, UK, and had no known cardiovascular disease or cancer, and completed the anglicized Short Form 36-item questionnaire (UK SF-36) during 1996 to 2000 in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer-Norfolk prospective population study. We …

Objectives To investigate the association between fruit and vegetable consumption and self-reported physical and mental functional health measured by an anglicised short-form 36-item questionnaire (UK SF-36). Design Population-based cross-sectional study. Setting General community in Norfolk, UK. Subjects A total of 16 792 men and women aged 40–79 years recruited from general practice population registers as part of the European Prospective Inves…
District Variations in Road Curvature in England and Wales and their Association with Road-Traffic Crashes
Bends in roads are known to cause road-traffic crashes, but do areas with many road bends have more collisions than areas with straighter roads? A geographical information system was used to generate indicators of average road curvature from a road-network dataset of England and Wales at the local-authority district level. The indicators were the number of bends per kilometre, the ratio of road distance to straight distance, the proportion of roa…

An alternative approach to quantifying and addressing inequity in healthcare provision: Access to surgery for lung cancer in the east of England
Study objective: Equitable access to healthcare services should be monitored routinely. This study compares provision of surgery for non-small cell lung cancer in the east of England with incidence of non-small cell lung cancer. In addition to conventional comparisons, process control charts are used to identify areas in which access seems to be significantly different from average. Design: Ecological comparison of surgery rates for non-small cel…
School breakfast clubs, children and family support
School breakfast clubs are a form of before school provision serving breakfast to children who arrive early. This paper explores their potential to provide support for families at risk of social exclusion. A national evaluation of a Department of Health pilot initiative suggests that their provision can afford valued support to families coping with varying degrees of difficulty in their material, environmental, relational and social circumstances…
What determines the use of home care services by elderly people: Home care services for elderly people
The objective of the present study was to investigate the determinants of use of statutory and private home care services by older people living in the community. A questionnaire was distributed to a stratified random sample of 2,000 elderly people living in the community registered with 11 general practices in a British city (equal numbers of men and women, aged 65-74 years, and 75 years or over). The outcome measures were the use of statutory o…
Dementia and the Over-75 Check: The role of the primary care nurse
Primary care nurses are very likely to provide a substantial part of the routine care for patients with dementia. In order to examine the knowledge and attitudes of the primary care nurses who undertake the Over-75 Check, towards assessing and managing patients with symptoms of dementia, and to assess their level of support for a clinical practice guideline, a postal questionnaire survey was undertaken of primary care nurses responsible for the O…
Promoting innovation Innovate or die
The concept of innovation is analysed and misconceptions are condemned. The Rolls-Royce engine RB211 and the Pilkington glass float process are cited as profitable examples of British innovations. Intellectual property is considered as a tradable commodity in the form of patents which can be bought and sold. The need to communicate with the City of London is discussed together with the international context within which innovation operates. It is…
Jack Cade's Rebellion of 1450
Compensation for harm: The implications for medical research
Jack Cade's rebellion of 1450
Cade's rebellion was one of the most important popular uprisings in England during the Middle Ages. In this study, the author charts the course of the rebellion and its associated troubles during the early 1450s and explores the nature of the society that gave rise to these upheavals.
The South-East of England
This chapter focuses on the South-East of England, where the major popular uprising of Henry VI's reign occurred. It describes the characteristic features of the landscape, economy, and society in South-East England. It also examines how different the south-eastern society of 1450 was from what it had been in 1381, when it participated in the Great Revolt, and how that memory of 1381 acted as a spur to action in the risings of the 1450s.
