Self-Care Is … A Qualitative Characterization of Self-Care Among Individuals Engaged in Non-Suicidal Self-Injury
Self-care is increasingly recognized as a central aspect of mental health recovery, yet its meaning and enactment among individuals who engage in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) remain poorly understood. Existing conceptual models emphasize self-care as behavioral regulation, awareness, and autonomy but may overlook the emotional and relational complexities that shape this process in psychiatric contexts. This qualitative study explored how indiv…
Small regions hosting large firms: When, how and why can local agency (not) shape regional development paths
There is a growing interest in the role of agency in shaping regional development paths in smaller, peripheral regions. However, when structural pre-conditions are limited or unfavourable, opportunities for local actors are constrained. In this paper, we combine the concepts of agency and opportunity space with a process-model of adaptive cycles in order to identify when, how, and why local actors are (not) able to shape regional development path…
Patterns of opportunity spaces and agency across regional contexts: Conditions and drivers for change
Non-metropolitan regions are considered more exposed to external shocks than their metropolitan counterparts, while having lower capacities to change. However, there is considerable variation among non-metropolitan regions. We argue that this variation can be captured theoretically by modelling the dynamic interplay between perceived and real opportunity spaces and agency. We empirically analyse regional change processes in 12 regions in the Nord…
The productivity effects of regional anchors on local firms in Swedish regions between 2007 and 2019—evidence from an expert-informed machine learning approach
The concept of regional anchor firms remains under-investigated. We analyse the mechanisms by which anchors affect other regional firms, disentangling effects resulting from scale/size vis-à-vis knowledge spillovers. Departing from previous idiographic research, we adopt a nomothetic research design and develop a stepwise expert-informed supervised machine learning approach to identify all anchor firms in Sweden between 2007 and 19. We find suppo…
Rescaling: Change agency and the emerging geography of economic relationships
In this paper, we propose a theoretical and conceptual framework for articulating and studying changes in the global economic landscape and illustrate this framework in the current context. The framework pivots around the notion of rescaling, which is interpreted from a human agency perspective. We disentangle three theoretically distinct dimensions of rescaling and show how they play together using concrete examples. The theoretical and conceptu…
Agency and economic change in regions: Identifying routes to new path development using qualitative comparative analysis
This paper investigates the role of human agency in 40 phases of regional economic development in 12 Nordic regions over 30 years. It contributes with a theoretical framework to study agency over time and a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis based on a unique dataset combining over 200 interviews, with printed and online sources, and quantitative data. The paper identifies which combinations of agency types and context conditions make ind…
Regional opportunity spaces – observations from Nordic regions
This paper further explores the novel concept of the opportunity space, which refers to the limits and possibilities of regional development trajectories and the idea of deliberative agency. Opportunity spaces are formed, perceived and used by individual agents or groups of agents and serve as a bridge between structure and agency. Drawing on six comparative case studies from Finland, Norway and Sweden, the study introduces a conceptual framework…
Functional Disability in Psychiatric Patients With Deliberate Self-Harm as Compared to a Clinical Control Group
Background: Deliberate self-harm (DSH) is a common behavior in psychiatric populations. However, little is known regarding how DSH impacts daily life. The concept of functional disability, adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO), refers to the impact of disorders on six domains of daily functioning. The aim of the current study was to explore the functional disability of psychiatric patients with DSH as compared to a psychiatric control gr…
Conflicts Around Elder Care in Mass Media: A Case Study of a Swedish TV-Documentary and the Reactions to it in Public Discourse
Public opinion regarding the organization of welfare and elder care are issues which have mainly been studied as expressions of individual attitudes or conflicting ideologies. By contrast, and departing from an understanding of the importance of context and societal rhetoric, this study explores a media event in the form of a Swedish TV documentary about problems in elder care and the reactions to it that were published in printed news media. The…
Measuring tolerance toward self-harm: Introducing the Lund Tolerance Toward Self-Harm Scale (Lutosh)
Although self-harm is a common behavior and exists in many contexts, previous research on tolerance and attitudes has focused primarily on health care providers. Less is known about tolerance toward self-harm in the general population. To the best of our knowledge, there is currently no scale assessing public tolerance toward self-harm. For this purpose, a brief scale was constructed and tested for its psychometric properties in 2 samples: a gene…
Nursing homes with lifestyle profiles – part of the marketisation of Swedish eldercare
Swedish nursing home residents are very frail, but a new trend is for nursing homes to adopt a lifestyle profile. Based on interviews with 16 representatives of care organisations, this study investigates the reasons for adopting profiles in this way. The analysis shows that the existence of lifestyle profiles is strongly linked to a market discourse centred on freedom of choice. It is concluded that lifestyle profiles are used as a differentiati…
Ethnically profiled nursing home care in Sweden – from culture to lifestyle
The paper investigates presentations of ethnically profiled nursing homes in Sweden, and in particular what categories these nursing homes target and what problems they are suggested to solve. The findings relate to the construction of older immigrants and to shifting ideas on responsibilities of the Swedish welfare state. Data consisted of 68 articles from newspapers and journals between the period of 1995 and 2015 that were analysed using quali…

Firm performance in the periphery: On the relation between firm-internal knowledge and local knowledge spillovers
Firm performance in the periphery: on the relation between firm-internal knowledge and local knowledge spillovers. Regional Studies. One of the most established arguments in regional studies is that knowledge dynamics shape the geography of economic activities and, more specifically, that knowledge-intensive activities benefit from collocation due to knowledge spillovers, local buzz and access to labour. There are, however, competing arguments th…

Swedish "Immigrant Literature" and the Ethnic Lens: The Representation of Cultural Diversity in Jonas Hassen Khemiri’s "Ett öga rött" and Marjaneh Bakhtiari’s "Kalla det vad fan du vill
Working-Class Literature(s)
"The aim of this collection is to make possible the forging of a more robust, politically useful, and theoretically elaborate understanding of working-class literature(s). These essays map a substantial terrain: the history of working-class literature(s) in Russia/The Soviet Union, The USA, Finland, Sweden, The UK, and Mexico. Together they give a complex and comparative ? albeit far from comprehensive ? picture of working-class literature(s) fro…
