Modelling the dynamics of regional employment–population ratios and their commonality
This paper looks at movements over time in regional employment–population ratios, an important and much neglected determinant of regional performance. We utilise data on gross flows into and out of employment and focus on information contained in the transition rates. The paper applies an unobserved components econometric model to a panel of Australian data to identify and explain the evolution of regional employment–population ratios over time. …

Regional Beveridge Curves
Dixon R., Lim G. C. and Freebairn J. Regional Beveridge curves: a latent variable approach, Regional Studies . This paper applies an unobserved components model to a panel of Australian data to identify the direction and timing of the shifts in regional Beveridge curves. The approach identifies a common factor while allowing for region-specific effects. The common factor that drives the relationship between regional unemployment and vacancy rates…
A Spectral-Temporal Index with an Application to U.S. Interest Rates
A Spectral–Temporal Index With an Application to U.S. Interest Rates
This article presents a flexible, data-analytic procedure for calculating spectral-temporal indexes by exploiting the duality property between frequency and time-domain procedures. The approach consists of capturing the interrelationships between the subordinate series across a range of cycles using a principal-components decomposition in the frequency domain and transforming this information into the time domain to construct a temporal index. Th…
Disequilibrium Adjustment Processes in the Local Tax-Expenditure System
Various studies have examined the equilibrium relationship between the local public sector and residential location. However, little is known about the disequilibrium adjustment processes in the provision of local public services. The present paper analyzes the dynamic process of disequilibrium adjustments in the local public sector in a realistic context. After deriving conditions for optimal provision of local services, factors displacing the i…
