  • Entrepreneurial finance and the survival of equity-funded firms in crisis periods

Open Access•Marek Kacer, Nick Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2025

This study investigates the resilience of 13,786 UK entrepreneurial firms that received equity financing before COVID-19, with 653 becoming insolvent and 6254 securing guaranteed loans during the pandemic. Utilising the resource-based view (RBV) and signalling theories, we hypothesise that equity-backed firms have sufficient resources to withstand crises, varying by investor type and involvement. We compare the bankruptcy risk of these firms duri…

  • Unpacking the money-distance nexus

Open Access•Ross Brown, Augusto Rocha et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2025

Attention is now increasingly being drawn to the interconnectedness of different entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs). Consequently, from a theoretical viewpoint EEs are increasingly being viewed from a multi-scaler rather than a mono-scaler perspective. This paper examines the spatial financial interlinkages between places and different forms and stages of entrepreneurial finance. Using a unique real-time data source of equity investments from Crunc…

  • Growth, working capital and refinancing

Open Access•Marc Cowling, Ross Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Papers of the Regional Science…•2025•Referencias: 15

Understanding how small firms adapt and adjust financially following exogenous shocks is crucial and acts as a harbinger of regional financial resilience levels. Therefore, it is important to determine what shape firms are in as they emerge from a shock such as the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly with regard to their ability to finance new growth enhancing activities. Yet not all firms are ready to invest in future growth and simply need an injec…

  • Discouraged exporters, regional resilience and the “Slow Burn” shock of Brexit

    Open Access•Marc Cowling, Ross Brown•ARTICLE•Papers of the Regional Science…•2024•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 10

Invoking the concept of regional resilience, this paper investigates how Brexit has affected the exporting behaviour of UK small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The research found only two UK regions, Northern Ireland and London, remained strongly export-oriented by volume and intensity of exports to the EU. Across most other regions we detected strong levels of disengagement from exporting, whereby “discouraged exporters” may experience lon…

  • Living on an Island

Open Access•Marc Cowling, Ross Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 8

In this paper we focus specifically on start-ups in remote island entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs) and consider the differences between these entrepreneurs compared to their mainland Scottish and UK counterparts. We find that Island new start-up entrepreneurs tend to be older, less well educated, more likely to be female, and less likely to be from an ethnic minority. They borrow similar amounts of start-up capital than their mainland counterpart…

  • Intra- and interregional flows of business angel investment

    Open Access•Marc Cowling, Ross Brown•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 6

Hitherto, the literature has largely overlooked the important role business angel finance plays in shaping different regional economies. Using a novel UK dataset, this paper calculates interregional inflows and outflows of business angel investment to identify the net winners and losers in terms of both the number of deals and the cash value of investment flows. We establish that only three regions were net beneficiaries while the other 11 UK reg…

  • Getting left behind? The localised consequences of exclusion from the credit market for UK SMEs

Open Access•Marc Cowling, Ross Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2023•Referencias: 11

Recent research has identified a key subset of the business population that comprises firms who had sought external finance but subsequently withdrew from the credit market completely despite still requiring finance. Utilising the UK’s Longitudinal Small Business Survey between 2015 and 2020, we identify the consequences in terms of lost jobs and sales of these small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) dropping out of the credit market for finan…

  • Covid-19 lending support and regional levelling up

Marc Cowling, Paul Nightingale et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2023•Referencias: 8

The economic consequences of COVID-19 were severe with restricted economic activity generating a liquidity crisis for many firms. To address the systemic impact of this liquidity shock, governments around the world rapidly introduced a range of loan guarantee schemes. In the UK, more than 1 million businesses accessed these schemes. Using a novel, comprehensive dataset, this paper explores the regional distribution of access to these schemes and …

  • The geography of business angel investments in the UK

Open Access•Marc Cowling, Ross Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2021•Referencias: 52

Business angels (BAs) - high net worth individuals who provide informal risk capital to firms - are seen as important providers of entrepreneurial finance. Theory and conventional wisdom suggest that the need for face-to-face interaction will ensure angels will have a strong predilection for local investments. We empirically test this assumption using a large representative survey of UK BAs. Our results show local bias is less common than previou…
