Living and working in ethnic enclaves: English Language proficiency of immigrants in US metropolitan areas
Flexibility and employment security in Europe: Labour markets in transition – Edited by Ruud J.A. Muffels
Quality of Life and the Migration of the College‐Educated: A Life‐Course Approach
This paper examines how the college‐educated population—segmented into selective demographic groups, from young adults to the elderly—differentially values quality‐of‐life (QOL) indicators of metropolitan areas in the United States. Using data from the 2000 Census and the 1997 Places Rated Almanac , out‐migration patterns are shown to depend jointly upon stage in the life course, the spatial‐demographic setting, and QOL characteristics. An abunda…

A Spatial Economic Perspective on Language Acquisition: Segregation, Networking, and Assimilation of Immigrants
Immigration and multiculturalism are at the heart of modern Western societies. The issue of language acquisition of immigrants is intrinsically linked to immigration. We formally link language acquisition of immigrants to the relative size of the immigrant stock, employing a microeconomic trading framework. Our model allows for spatial interaction going beyond the immigrant's area of residence, and explicitly incorporates spatial segregation. In …
Localized Effects of Globalization: The Case of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico
This paper explores how the rise of global industrialization has altered the internal complexion of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, the largest and fastest growing of Mexico's northern border cities. First, we trace the political-economic history of Ciudad Juárez and other northern Mexican border cities in order to understand the context of rapid industrialization. Second, we document the dimensions of industrialization by tracing historic trends in po…

Industrialization and land use change in Mexican border cities: The case of Ciudad Juárez, México
The maquiladora (maquila) economy has brought enormous change to Mexico's northern border region during the last few decades. Scholars have studied many aspects of the region's maquila economy, including bi‐national trade, a range of environmental issues, and social and cultural impacts arising from rapid industrialization. Few, however, have examined the relationship between industrialization and the development of urban land. We respond to this…

Europe's Population in the 1990s
This study presents a contemporary picture of Europe's population, detailing birth rates, immigration, mortality, family formation and dissolution. Illustrated with numerous tables and graphs, it considers some of the causes of observed trends, such as economic pressures, the spread of new values, and the importance of family policies in creating an ageing Europe threatened by population decline
The Age of Migration: International Population Movements in the Modern World . Stephen Castles and Mark J. Miller
The Internal Dynamic of International Migration Systems
In this paper I provide a conceptualization of international migration networks, which can be used to identify and integrate the internal components of migration systems, and formalize the relationships in an analytic model of the internal network dynamic. With the use of the operationalized model, and microlevel and macrolevel data for guestworkers in Germany during the period 1970 to 1989, we can empirically test the relative influence of inter…
Determinants of International Return Migration Intentions
This paper analyzes the determinants of international return migration intentions using survey data on guestworkers in Germany, 1970–1989. It is hypothesized that return migration intentions are influenced by personal attributes, residential and job satisfaction, and three time-dependent variables: a temporal trend, a duration effect, and years prior to retirement. The hypotheses are tested using logit models of the intention to return. The resul…
Assimilation and Attachment in the Context of International Migration: The Case of Guestworkers in Germany
Segregation in Urban Space: A New Measurement Approach
A variety of segregation measures have been proposed in the literature with the dissimilarity index and its variants being the most widely applied. While these measures provide a quick means of comparing segregation patterns across space and time, they are not linked to the processes that generate and maintain segregative patterns. This paper proposes a new method for measuring segregation. The method is based on comparative evaluations of neighb…

A Spatial Analysis of Rent Shifts in the Chicago Rental Housing Market, 1970-1980
Residential rent shift variations across space are essential components of urban dynamics. For example, they play an important role in the context of housing availability, housing affordability, and urban revitalization. This paper develops a rent shift model that includes spatial variables and traditional housing market attributes such as housing quality and resident composition. The model estimation employs data for the City of Chicago, 1970- 1…
Housing Policy Impacts on Ethnic Segregation Patterns: Evidence from Dusseldorf, West Germany
Ethnic residential segregation has been of long-standing concern in cities throughout the world. Policy-makers are faced with decisions that potentially have a profound impact on these segregative patterns. This study illustrates the applicability of a recently developed analytical model of ethnic segregation and relocation in urban housing markets to housing policy evaluations. Using 1981 data for the city of Diisseldorf, West Germany, the effec…
A Behavioral Model of International Labor and Nonlabor Migration: The Case of Turkish Movements to West Germany, 1960-1986
In this paper behavioral models of international labor and nonlabor migration are presented. The models are based on the concept of chain migration, where the immigrant stock, differentiated by the duration of stay, induces and directs future migration flows. Three roles of the immigrant stock in inducing the inflow of potential migrants are identified: provider of assimilation aid; transmitter of information; and source of family reunification. …
Labor Migration to Western Europe: A Commentary on O'Loughlin 1986
In this commentary we challenge O'Loughlin's article published in Environment and Planning A, in which he concludes that economic factors only marginally influence migration from the European periphery to Western Europe. First, we consider several methodological inconsistencies that bring O'Loughlin's study into question. Second, a model is developed, derived from disequilibrium theory, that, in contrast to O'Loughlin's findings, demonstrates the…
