  • Women and the coloniality of urban atmospheres of terror in Rio de Janeiro's favelas

    Open Access•Anne‐marie Veillette, Anne-Marie Veillette•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning D…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 58

This essay examines the urban atmospheres of terror in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from the perspective of women residents. Drawing on two ethnographic projects conducted in various favelas in 2016 and 2019, I argue that terror, as an urban atmosphere, is deeply rooted in a long history of racialized and gendered violence, and that its persistence in the contemporary urban landscape is a consequence of the coloniality of power. The ana…

  • Racialized Popular Feminism

    Open Access•Anne‐marie Veillette, Anne-Marie Veillette•ARTICLE•Latin American Perspectives•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 17

The action of the women of Rio de Janeiro's favelas to avoid, prevent, counter, and denounce police violence, both infrapolitically and in the public transcript, are associated with the rise of a political consciousness that is gendered and racialized in the context of the genocide of Brazil's black population. Their resistance, rooted in "Amefricanidade" and the lingering coloniality of gender, is best described as characterized by an intersecti…

    Anne‐marie Veillette, Anne-Marie Veillette•ARTICLE•Mouvements•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 1
