Is resistance futile? Fuelling collective work in the face of AI
The emergence of the AI age is radically transforming the nature, purpose and politics of knowledge production, particularly collective knowledge production. While artificial intelligence is often celebrated as a powerful manifestation of collective knowledge, drawing upon vast repositories of human-generated information, it is built on exploitative and extractive practices. This editorial argues that genuine collective knowledge production must …
Feminist digital ethnographies
Digital mediations of various elements of ethnographic research can shift sociospatial contexts of gathering and interpreting evidence, encounters with research participants, and emotional and embodied experiences in research. Yet, there remains limited reflection by geographers on digital ethnographies and their implications for sociospatial research. We contribute to these discussions through articulation of ‘feminist digital ethnography’: a me…
I hope you can help me
Housing and care relations are deeply gendered. Analyzing these relationships through consideration of cisheteropatriarchal structures facilitates a deeper understanding of systemic contexts shaping tenants' experiences of care in housing crises and the protection of property ownership through normative hierarchies of gender and sexualities. Yet, understandings of how tenants' care work is situated within cisheteropatriarchal relations remains li…
Archiving the Housing Conjuncture
The past months have continued to exacerbate crises of housing, home, displacement, dispossession, and other state-sanctioned forms of violence and premature death. We witness erasure of histories, lives lived, belongings, and homes, which are intentional strategies to forcibly remove people from place and to make it seem as though they were never there. The authors thus document this conjunctural moment in radical housing struggles and collectiv…
‘It’s the hope that kills you’
Leading up to the Ted Lasso (2020–23) series finale in May 2023, fans anticipated whether various white, heterosexual romantic relationships on the show would come to fruition. When the finale finally aired, there was considerable disappointment at the lack of romantic conclusions for their characters, rather than satisfaction in the friendships that were developed over the show’s three seasons. Yet, queer and feminist theorizations of friendship…
Caring Housing Futures
Hegemonic responses to housing crises overwhelmingly rely on liberal economic logics, which preclude understandings of housing inequalities as produced by intersecting structures of racial capitalism and settler colonialism. This creates housing futures that replicate housing injustice, through the reproduction of housing crises that uphold racial capitalism, the settler state, and white property ownership. To address this gap, I develop a radica…
Life-Affirmative Struggles for Home Across Borders
Issue 5.1 of the Radical Housing Journal (RHJ) examines the current state of struggles for housing and home amidst capital-accumulation-induced urban restructuring worldwide. The authors discuss the enduring impact of settler colonialism on land and housing rights, particularly for Indigenous peoples. Feminist, queer, and trans perspectives are brought to the forefront, emphasizing the leadership roles played by marginalized communities in housin…
‘The rents keep on rising and so do we’
In January 2021, over 700 students living in the UK’s University of Sussex accommodation withheld their rent in defiance of the unacceptable conditions of housing and unreasonable rent prices. Primarily, this was a reaction to their anger and upset at how Sussex had falsely assured them that, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, they should expect a normal student experience. However, the rent strike action also needs to be contextualised withi…
Hotels as Noncongregate Emergency Shelters
This study analyzes the COVID-19 homelessness response in King County, Washington, in which people were moved out of high-density emergency shelters into hotel rooms. This intervention was part of a regional effort to de-intensify the shelter system and limit the transmission of the virus to protect vulnerable individuals experiencing homelessness. This study used quantitative and qualitative methods to describe the experiences of and outcomes on…
Understanding Black feminist spatial politics in Atlanta’s public housing
Homes not shelters”
The financialization of housing, which privileges the exchange value of housing as a commodity over its use value, disproportionately impacts low-income households, women, and people of colour by exacerbating precarious, insecure, and unsafe housing conditions, thereby shaping their experiences of home. In this paper, I engage critical geographies of home and draw on ethnographic work in low-income housing sites for women in Vancouver, Canada. I …
State interventions, inequalities and people as infrastructure at times of Covid-19 in Lagos, Nigeria
In this conversation RHJ Editors Solange and Ana met with the Argentine researchers and organisers, Lucia Cavallero, Verónica Gago and Florencia Presta to learn about the increase in housing violence and struggles for housing and home in Argentina during the pandemic. They describe the intensification of ‘landlord violence’ and land seizures as well as an ‘implosion of home’ as a result of accelerated indebtedness and impoverishment. We tackle is…
Transitioning to Homeownership
This paper assesses the asset building of households that take part in shared-equity homeownership (SEH) models. The contribution of this paper is a comparison of outcomes for households participating in shared-equity programs to other low- and moderate-income households who rent or own properties without restrictions on appreciation. We matched participants in SEH programs to households with similar characteristics from the Panel Study of Income…
Effects of a Brief E-Learning Resource on Sexual Attitudes and Beliefs of Healthcare Professionals Working in Prostate Cancer Care
Sexual issues and treatment side effects are not routinely discussed with men receiving treatment for prostate cancer, and support to address these concerns is not consistent across settings. This study evaluates a brief e-learning resource designed to improve sexual wellbeing support and examine its effects on healthcare professionals' sexual attitudes and beliefs. Healthcare professionals ( n = 44) completed an online questionnaire at baseline …
Not your “poor dear”’
Care is a political process, a set of social relations, and a marketized product. The spatialization of care is complicated when there are diverse caring relations within sites of marketized care. I focus on how care is produced and conceived in non-profit housing for women, in Vancouver, Canada, and how people experience and feel about their homes. I demonstrate the significance of mutual care, caring relations that subvert the giver-receiver hi…
