  • Engaging With Children: Why We Must Continue to Learn From Every Study We Undertake

Open Access•Faith Gibson, Jo Wray et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2026

This paper examines researchers’ use of visual methods and arts-based activities, when researching with children who have rare diseases, about their experiences of happiness, fulfilment, and resilience. Their perspectives were sought in order that a tailored ‘Bank of Happiness’ intervention be tested to investigate whether this approach could promote children’s wellbeing and resilience in this setting and applied more widely in the future. In thi…

  • Assessing the extent of bone bioerosion in short timescales – A novel approach for quantifying microstructural loss

    Open Access•Caley Mein, Anna Williams•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2023

The evaluation of bone diagenetic phenomena in archaeological timescales is well established, but little is known about the extent of bone diagenesis in short forensic timescales. In particular, the use of the Oxford Histological Index (OHI) has become synonymous with assessing bioerosion in archaeological bone samples, but it may not be ideal for use on samples with shorter, forensic post-depositional timescales. Here, we present a novel method …

  • I, Misfit: Empty Fortresses, Social Robots, and Peculiar Relations in Autism Research

Anna Williams•ARTICLE•Techné Research in Philosophy and…•2021

I draw upon Critical Disability Studies and Race Critical Code Studies to apply an oppositional reading of applied robotics in autism intervention. Roboticists identify care work as a prime legitimizing application for their creations. Popular imagination of robotics in therapeutic or rehabilitative contexts figures the robot as nurse or orderly. Likewise, the dominant narrative tropes of autism are robotic—misfit androids, denizens of the uncann…

  • Six Ways of Looking at Fractal Mechanics

    Open Access•Anna Williams, Rua Williams•ARTICLE•Catalyst Feminism Theory…•2021

In this creative nonfiction essay, I traverse through permutations of “fractal mechanics” as a means of processing experiences of oppression and imagining revolutionary futures. I introduce fractal mechanics as a method for thinking through how “the institution,” broadly understood, travels and transmutes from physical structure localized in place to a set of internalized rule sets that bind themselves to transinstitutionalized “host bodies”—a Ne…

  • Factors associated with crack-cocaine early initiation: A Brazilian multicenter study

Open Access•Luciane Ogata Perrenoud, Koki Fernando Oikawa et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Early onset of crack-cocaine use seems to be associated with exposure to family conflict, easy access to drugs and deviant behavior. Treatment and preventive programs should take these factors into account when designing and implementing community interventions

Facilitated Communication (FC) is a technique of supported communication for non- speaking people with motor movements commonly understood as spasmodic, dyspraxic, or otherwise unruly. FC is a contentious site of scientific conflict where highly circumscribed quantitative experiments have been unable to reckon with the lived reality of typers. The debate over the efficacy of FC centers around broader arguments of what counts as scientific rigor a…

Inspiring the transformational changes required to address the climate crisis, as well as other global challenges, requires acting boldly and taking risks. New approaches that integrate transformational change thinking and concepts into evaluations, and that further deepen the nexus of evaluation and learning, are urgently needed. Open Access•Margaretha Fahlgren, Christine Rubertsson et al.•ARTICLE•Tidskrift för genusvetenskap•2019•References: 1

This article explores if conversations about literary texts that thematize abortion can provide new knowledge about the clinical everyday practice of midwives. The empirical material consists of conversations with seven clinical midwives after shared reading of a sample of fictional and biographical Swedish texts from the 1930s, 1950s, 1990s, and 2010s. Drawing on theories of power relations, gendered knowledge, and narrative medicine, the articl…

  • Forensic Science Education and Training: A Tool‐kit for Lecturers and Practitioner Trainers

Open Access•Peter Andrew Cross, Anna Williams et al.•BOOK•Forensic Science Education and…•2017

The establishment of the human taphonomic facility helped drive the interest in human decomposition and boosted the term taphonomy into the forensic science arena. Discussions of human taphonomy began to appear in the forensic literature based upon observations made at the University of Tennessee facility. Forensic taphonomic research within the United Kingdom and Europe has focused on the use of animal models, notably the domestic pig, Sus scrof…

  • Disciplining animals: Sentience, Production, and Critique

    Open Access•Anna Williams•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2004•Cited by: 16•References: 3

This essay critiques the assertion that an appreciation of animal sentience necessarily runs counter to their exploitation as industrial resources. It is argued that the U.S. meatpacking industry has consistently engaged animals as sentient creatures in order to elicit behavior that enhances manufacturing efficiency. This discipline of animals in and around the packing plant is exemplified in Temple Grandin’s “humane” slaughter technologies. The …
