Rethinking Jurisdiction
This manuscript utilizes data from policy stakeholder interviews and a systematic search of government websites to identify how the federal, provincial, territorial, and municipal governments in Canada address food loss and waste (FLW) and how stakeholders interpret jurisdiction over this issue. The findings show that government policies related to this issue represent a patchwork of disparate and overlapping actions that have been enacted by gov…
Feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary impact of “Supper Heroes”, a family-based sustainable diet intervention
The primary objective of this research was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of "Supper Heroes", a superhero-themed mobile health (mHealth) intervention designed to reduce food waste and increase plant-based protein food intake among families with children aged 9-14 in Ontario, Canada. A single arm, pre-post mixed methods design was used to evaluate the intervention. The 4-month mHealth intervention included 7 online modules with info…
The climate change context of being a carer
Children and young people are living with the prospect of climate change and its worrying implications for the future. This applies to children who are young carers, yet silence reigns on this topic. New connections between scholarship on young carers and the consideration of emerging eco-social approaches to policy have the potential to contribute to addressing these problems. In this article, I argue that the climate crisis is relevant to under…
A Methodology for the Study of Affective Policies
While interest in the study of affects grows, there is a need for methodologies that generate new analytical perspectives on subjects such as the connection between affects and policies. Reviewing the interconnections between the literature on affect and policy, I argue that methodological developments through visual ethnography can draw them closer together. I report the methods and analysis from a visual ethnographic study that sheds light on u…
Exploring the Distinctiveness of Social Enterprises Delivering Adult Social Care in England
Social enterprises, which are businesses with social objectives, have been championed by the UK government as an opportunity to deliver more innovative, socially oriented, and commercially sustainable public services. However, very little is known about them, especially in a social care context. This paper therefore aims to answer the following three questions: (1) What are care social enterprises?, (2) What are their distinctive qualities?, and …
The colonialism of carbon capture and storage in Alberta's Tar Sands
This essay considers carbon capture and storage (CCS) in relation to struggles over value and territorial jurisdiction in the Alberta Tar Sands. Critical engagements with CCS have pointed to the legitimising function of the technology and highlight its role normalising extraction in the tar sands. We suggest that neither the significance of CCS nor the legitimation function it performs can be fully understood absent an analysis of settler colonia…
Unequal Conditions of Care and the Implications for Social Policies on Young Carers
Young carers are the subject of public policies in the UK, which aim to address their needs as a group experiencing disadvantage relating to their caring role. These policies are implemented in a way that aims to improve their health and their educational and social opportunities, but left unaddressed is a wider context of inequalities. Nevertheless, inequalities are a feature of the terrain upon which social policies for young carers are develop…
Affects of policy design
This article presents an analysis of policies on young carers in England, considering both the design but also the lived experience of policy subjects. Drawing on affect theory we can increase understanding of the reach of these policies into family life and the nature of English policy‐making focussed on this group. This analytic framework presents the opportunity to draw on the use of affect theory developed in other disciplines but less so in …
