  • On language, (inter)disciplinarity, and collaboration with local scholars in Papua New Guinea environmental anthropology

Open Access•Mark Collins, Tukul Walla Kaiku•ARTICLE•The Australian Journal of…•2026•References: 4

How can anthropologists ensure the accuracy of the statements they make in their publications, especially in an era of ever increasing budgetary and bureaucratic pressures that limit the duration of fieldwork? What should the role of language abilities be in this context and to what degree is it necessary to learn the language of the place where one works as an anthropologist? How can anthropologists heed what are clearly important calls for the …

  • Indigenous coastal management in Papua New Guinea

    Open Access•Paige West, Mark Collins et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning E Nature…•2025•References: 43

On Lovangai Island in Papua New Guinea, Indigenous communities have worked with Indigenous scientists and international anthropologists to document and revitalize traditional stone fish traps. These locally designed and enacted projects are an Indigenous form of coastal planning which refuses both state-planning and conservation organization planning. They are also a form of biocultural revitalization that foregrounds Indigenous sovereignty. Base…

  • Identification of Real and Artifactual Moderators of Effect Size in Meta-Analysis

    Mark Collins, Timothy A Carey•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•2015

This article argues that while meta-analytic studies are widely used in psychological literature, heterogeneity and the potential for confounding remain major problems in the interpretation of meta-analytic study results. The article demonstrates the use of exploratory analysis including graphical methods prior to meta-analysis, and introduces a methodology to screen for artifactual effects. These procedures are illustrated on effect size data co…

  • Forest Governance in a Changing World

    Jeffrey Sayer, Jeffrey A Sayer et al.•ARTICLE•The Round Table•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 7

There has been intense international debate on the governance of forests, in particular tropical forests. This has been driven by contrasting pressures from conservation and human rights groups, respectively calling for global values to prevail so as to protect biodiversity and reduce climate change, or for freedom of choice that empowers local people with the right to manage their own forests. Both sides have condemned irresponsible behaviour by…

  • The King's High Table at the Palace of Westminster

    Open Access•Mark Collins, Phillip A Emery et al.•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Archaeological and engineering work that took place in Westminster Hall in 2005–6 led to the discovery of further remains of the King's High Table, to add to those discovered in 1960. The Purbeck marble table stood at the south end of the hall from the thirteenth century to the seventeenth century and was the focus and symbol of English monarchy, serving particular roles in coronation feasts and in the development of the law courts. This paper su…

  • The Challenge of the 21st Century

    David T Suzuki, David Suzuki et al.•ARTICLE•The Round Table•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This article outlines the gravity of the environmental crisis—pollution, climate change, overpopulation and the unpredictable environmental impacts from our use of science and technology and exploitation of natural resources. We must put the ‘eco’ back into economics and realise what the conditions and principles are for truly sustainable living. We have to set a new bottom line, a bottom line dictated by the reality that we are biological creatu…
