The Work of Incompleteness
Extending Howard Becker’s concept of “intermediate objects,” first introduced in Art from Start to Finish (2006), we theorize the material incompleteness of cultural works not as an objective, transitional stage in the artistic process, but as an ambiguous, negotiated social category that extends beyond production. We draw upon ethnographic studies of two lowbrow, stigmatized cultural fields—digital pornography and counterfeit goods. In the porn …

A Novel Method in Surface Water Quality Assessment Based on Improved Variable Fuzzy Set Pair Analysis
In the case of surface water pollution, it is important and necessary to accurately assess the level of contaminated water and ensure the safety of drinking water for people in disaster areas during floods. However, for the assessment of the strict requirements of drinking water, traditional assessment methods still have some limitations, such as low precision and rationality. In order to overcome these limitations, in the light of the theory of …
Ethnomethodology reconsidered
This article compares ethnomethodology to social systems theory and attempts to clarify their theoretical concerns, differences and similarities when synthetically considering the former as a practical logic of the latter. As two poles on a continuum of research methods, ethnomethodology is a microanalysis of social order and human agency, whereas systems theory assumes a macro and theoretical abstraction of system formation and social evolution.…
Reframing the Medium Theory
This essay examines the concept of medium and other medium/media theories. Compared to the emphasis Marshall McLuhan and Joshua Meyrowitz place on the direct impact of the media on how people understand the world, the major theme of this paper is that such impact cannot be regarded as so direct, and their theories can be reframed with Niklas Luhmann’s social systems theory. Thus, we can distinguish the medium system from the psychological and oth…
