The interventional advantage of interpersonal emotion regulation in vicariously learned fear: Evidence from behavioral and event-related potential studies

Afforestation Enhances Soil Organic Matter Complexity and Persistence: The Role of Root Inputs and Calcium‐Mediated Stabilization in a Karst Region
Afforestation is a primary nature‐based strategy for climate change mitigation, yet its efficacy relies on the long‐term persistence of sequestered soil organic carbon (SOC). Nevertheless, the molecular‐level mechanisms governing this persistence remain understudied. Here, we investigated the impacts of afforestation on former maize fields after 20 years on soil organic matter (SOM) molecular composition and complexity in topsoil (0–15 cm) and su…

A framework for demonstrating, forecasting, and explaining topic evolution by analyzing geometrical motion of topic embeddings
Topic analysis aims to study topic evolution and trends in order to help researchers understand the process of knowledge evolution and creation. This paper develops a novel topic evolution analysis framework, which we use to demonstrate, forecast, and explain topic evolution from the perspective of the geometrical motion of topic embeddings generated by pretrained language models. Our data set comprises approximately 15 million papers in the comp…
Exploration and exploitation: Which research strategy are you better at
This study quantifies and analyzes the individual-level abilities of scientists utilizing either an exploration or an exploitation strategy. Specifically, we present a Research Strategy Q model, which untangles the coupling effect of scientists’ research ability (Qα) and research strategy ability (Eαπ) on research performance. Qα indicates scientists’ fundamental ability to publish high-quality papers, while Eαπ indicates scientists’ proficiency …
Confucian Economic Ethics
Confucian economic ethics is centred around the relationship between moral rightness and economic and other external benefits. It is a consensus that Confucianism gives priority to rightness over benefits. Scholars disagree on whether this is because Confucianism regards rightness as an intrinsic value independent of, even though not necessarily inconsistent with, benefits, or because it sees rightness as the best instrument to produce benefits. …

A theory of emotion based on a universal model
The complexity of emotions has thus far limited our understanding of them. To obtain a clear understanding of the nature of emotion, this paper proposes a novel emotion theory and establishes a universal model of the conscious world in the human brain, the substanguage and interaction model (SIM). Based on an analysis of the possibilities of the interaction process in the SIM, two basic emotions that are indecomposable factors within all emotions…

Respecting Different Ways of Life: A Daoist Ethics of Virtue in theZhuangzi
As the ethics of virtue, with a focus on cultivating admirable traits of character instead of commanding adherence to rigid rules, becomes increasingly popular in contemporary moral discourses, scholars have tried to find evidence of virtue ethics in such ancient traditions as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. This article explores the possibility of a virtue ethics in a tradition that has been largely neglected, Chinese Daoism, by focusing o…

Why an Upright Son Does Not Disclose His Father Stealing a Sheep: A Neglected Aspect of the Confucian Conception of Filial Piety
In the Analects, Confucius recommends to not disclose one’s father stealing a sheep, claiming that zhi 直lies within it. This passage has become the focus of a heated and prolonged debate among Chinese scholars in the last decade. A proper understanding of zhi, which is central to understanding this whole passage, is to straighten the crooked, or uprighten the non-upright. So what Confucius means is that the upright son ought to make his non-uprig…

Charles Taylor's transcendental arguments for liberal communitarianism
This paper sees Charles Taylor's moral discourse as a version of liberal communitarianism, an attempt to reconcile liberalism and communitarianism, by examining his three transcendental arguments: the liberal transcendence from the parochial to the universal; the communi tarian transcendence from the instinctual to the ontological; and the theistic transcendence from the good to God. While this liberal communi tarianism absorbs some great insight…
Political Solidarity and Religious Plurality: A Rortian Alternative to Liberalism and Communitarianism
There are two very different sets of questions that thoughtful intellectuals ask. On the one hand, we ask those questions like whether there is a God, how many gods there are, who or what God is, and where God exists. On the other hand, we ask those questions like whether women are essentially subordinate to men, whether blacks are by nature inferior to whites, and whether the poor are necessarily secondary to the rich. Despite some strong protes…

Foundation of Religious Beliefs after Foundationalism: Wittgenstein between Nielsen and Phillips
Religious beliefs have often been taken either as absolutely foundational to all others or as ultimately founded on something else. This essay starts with an endorsement of the contemporary critique of foundationalism but sets its task as to search for the foundation(s) of religious belief after foundationalism. In its third and main part, it argues for a Wittgensteinian reflective equilibrium (within a belief system, between believing and acting…
God as Absolute Spirit: A Heideggerian Interpretation of Hegel's God-Talk
In this postmodern era, God-talk is facing serious challenges. Is it still possible to have a meaningful concept of God after the demise of metaphysical realism? How can we make sense of the idea of absolute transcendence in a secularized world? In what sense can we still believe something as divine revelation when foundationalism is no longer taken for granted? While some believe that we can go about our old theological business as usual, others…

A Copper Rule versus the Golden Rule: A Daoist-Confucian Proposal for Global Ethics
Here a moral principle called the "Copper Rule" is developed and defended as an alternative to the Golden Rule. First, the article focuses on two problems with the Golden Rule's traditional formulation of "Do (or don't do) unto others what you would (or would not) have them do unto you": it assumes (1) the uniformity of human needs and preferences and (2) that whatever is universally desired is good. Second, it examines three attempts to reformul…
Confucian love and global ethics: How the cheng brothers would help respond to christian criticisms
There is an increasing awareness that we are living in a global village, which demands a global ethics. In this article, I shall explore what contributions Confucianism, particularly its conception of love, can make. It has often been claimed that Confucian love is love with distinction, as a natural feeling, and as merely human love and so it is inferior to the Christian love, which is universal, commanded, and based on divine love. Drawing on t…
Cross-cultural validation of stages of exercise change scale among Chinese college students
The purpose of the study was to test the cross-cultural concurrent validity of the stages of exercise change scale (SECS) in Chinese college students. The original SECS was translated into Chinese (C-SECS). Students from four Chinese universities ( N = 1843) participated in the study. The leisure-time exercise (LTE) questionnaire was used to provide data to test the concurrent validation of the C-SECS. Results indicated an increase in total LTE a…

The Cheng Brothers’ Onto-theological Articulation of Confucian Values
In this article, I attempt to provide a new interpretation of li (commonly translated as ‘principle’) in the neo-Confucian brothers Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi. I argue that (1) the two brothers’ views on li are not as radically different as many scholars have made us to believe; (2) li in both brothers is a de-reified conception, referring not to some entity, including the entity with activity, but to activity, the life-giving activity of the ten tho…
Confucian Theology: Three Models
If there are still disagreements about whether Confucianism is a religion, there seems to be a consensus that Confucianism does not have a theology. In this article, I attempt to show that there are at least three models of serious god-talks in the Confucian tradition: (i) heaven is discussed in the Confucian classics ofBook of Documents,Books of Poetry, andAnalectsas something transcendent of the world, similar to Christian God in crucial aspect…
Neo-Confucian Hermeneutics at Work: Cheng Yi's Philosophical Interpretation of Analects 8.9 and 17.3
In this article, I discuss the Song 宋 Neo-Confucian Cheng Yi's 程頤 (1033–1107) interpretation of two related controversial passages in the Analects , the recorded sayings of Confucius. The term “neo-Confucianism” was coined by Western scholars to refer to the Confucianism of the period from the Song dynasty to the Ming 明 dynasty (and sometimes through the Qing 清 dynasty). Among Chinese scholars, neo-Confucianism is most commonly referred to as the…
WHY BE Moral?” The Cheng Brothers' Neo‐Confucian Answer
In this article, I present a neo‐Confucian answer, by Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi, to the question, “Why should I be moral?” I argue that this answer is better than some representative answers in the Western philosophical tradition. According to the Chengs, one should be moral because it is a joy to perform moral actions. Sometimes one finds it a pain, instead of a joy, to perform moral actions only because one lacks the necessary genuine moral knowle…

Confucius and Mencius on the Motivation to Be Moral
Focusing on the Analects and the Mencius, this article attempts to provide a Confucian answer to “why be moral?”—a question about the motivation to be moral that is neither tautological nor self-contradictory, as some philosophers claim. The Confucian answer to this question is that to be moral is joyful. While one may find joy in doing non-moral and even immoral things, one ought to seek joy in being moral or at least in being not immoral, as be…

Can virtue be taught and how? Confucius on the paradox of moral education
In this paper I shall first examine an apparent paradox in Confucius' view on whether everyone is perfectible through education: on the one hand, he states that education should be provided to all, on the other hand, he says that common people cannot be made to know things. To understand this apparent paradox, I shall argue that education for Confucius is primarily moral education, as he teaches his students to become virtuous persons. So the app…
Two Dilemmas in Virtue Ethics and How Zhu Xi’s Neo-Confucianism Avoids Them
Virtue ethics has become an important rival to deontology and consequentialism, the two dominant moral theories in modern Western philosophy. What unites various forms of virtue ethics and distinguishes virtue ethics from its rivals is its emphasis on the primacy of virtue. In this article, I start with an explanation of the primacy of virtue in virtue ethics and two dilemmas, detected by Gary Watson, that virtue ethics faces: (1) virtue ethics m…
