Long-term impact of early-life exposure to war logistics during the Dien Bien Phu campaign on education and development
The long-lasting effect of feudal human capital
The impact of early parental education on children’s welfare
The long-term impacts of Iran–Iraq war on education and employment outcomes
Multi-generational effects of school access in a developing country
Heterogeneous effects of natural disasters on migration and household well-being in rural Vietnam
Impact of internal migration on the economic well‐being of local workers and school dropouts among children in Vietnam
This study examines the impact of migration on local workers and high school dropouts of local students. A conventional approach without addressing the endogeneity issue may lead to biased results. Growth, inequality and poverty in Vietnam
Using the Vietnamese Living Standards Surveys for 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008, we explore how provinces with differential access to trade liberalisation reforms differ in their pro‐poor growth performance in Vietnam. Using both non‐parametric and parametric estimation, we find strong, robust evidence of pro‐poor growth in provinces with greater exposure to trade liberalisation. Using censored and uncensored regressions, the study also shows that in…
The Long-Run and Gender-Equalizing Impacts of School Access
Few studies exist on the long-term impacts of schooling policies in developing countries. We examine the impacts—half a century later—of a mass education program conducted by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam during the First Indochina War (1946–54). Difference-in-differences estimates suggest that school-age children who were exposed to the program obtained significantly more education than their peers who were residing in French-occupied areas…
Labor market impacts and responses
Land fragmentation, women empowerment and school dropout of children in Vietnam
The effect of domestic violence against women on child welfare in Vietnam
The role of rice in poverty dynamics in rural Vietnam
Using the Vietnamese Household Living Standards Surveys of 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008, this paper investigates the role of rice in poverty dynamics in the recent context of Vietnam. We find that sizeable changes in rice prices in the 2000s, which were driven largely by the country's integration into the world markets, have not helped rural households escape poverty, even for households with large-scale rice production. Our results also document t…
