Conceptualizing digitalization orientation as a strategic posture – How to boost the impact of digital technologies in businesses
Due to the far-reaching and multifaceted potential of digital technologies, finding a way to enable digital technologies to unleash their full potential and to create competitive advantages is complex. Family businesses are often particularly careful with accepting innovation and represent insightful cases for analyzing digital transformation. We propose that digital transformation works particularly well when it is anchored as a strategic orient…
Accounting for variability in conflict dynamics
Existing models for predicting conflict fatalities frequently produce conservative forecasts that gravitate towards the mean. While these approaches have a low average prediction error, they offer limited insights into temporal variations in conflict-related fatalities. Yet, accounting for variability is particularly relevant for policymakers, providing an indication on when to intervene. In this article, we introduce a novel risk-taking methodol…
The 2023/24 Views Prediction challenge
Governmental and nongovernmental organizations have increasingly relied on early-warning systems of conflict to support their decisionmaking. Predictions of war intensity as probability distributions prove closer to what policymakers need than point estimates, as they encompass useful representations of both the most likely outcome and the lower-probability risk that conflicts escalate catastrophically. Point-estimate predictions, by contrast, fa…

The Hitherto Unknown
In the 1920s and 1930s, filmmakers in Germany, the Soviet Union, and the United States created synthetic sounds by printing photographic or drawn patterns directly onto a filmstrip's optical soundtrack. This essay examines these practices alongside the radical film theories of Dziga Vertov and Jean Epstein in order to test the limits of sonic epistemology—and, ultimately, to imagine what it might mean to conceive of synthetic sound as documentary…
Decreasing the Effects of Relationship Conflict on Family Businesses
The study examines how family climate counteracts the constraints in the business system created by relationship conflict that is known to negatively affect business outcomes (firm satisfaction and firm performance). Cross-sectional self-reported data were obtained from a nationally representative sample of 392 Austrian family businesses. The core tenet of sustainable family business theory provided the theoretical underpinnings for the study's h…
Declining Populations of Freshwater Pearl Mussels (Margaritifera margaritifera) Are Burdened with Heavy Metals and DDT/DDE
Many aquatic mollusks, such as the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera), are in decline throughout Europe. The reasons are largely unknown; factors that have been suggested to contribute are river bed compaction due to agricultural practices, eutrophication, or pollutants of various natures. Brittle shells of recently deceased pearl mussels from northern Bavaria with weak calcium incrustations point to the possibility that calciu…
Transformationen kooperativen Handelns
