Between autonomy and interdependence: The changing parental role in adult children's family formation in China
Quantitative Studies on Color and Film Genres: A Systematic Review
This study conducts a systematic review of quantitative research examining the relationship between color and film genres, specifically focusing on the attributes of hue, saturation, and brightness. An extensive search of Web of Science and Scopus identified eight important articles on US film productions published in English. Given that most prior studies in this domain have been qualitative, the advent of quantitative studies offers novel insig…

Exploring the affordances of text and picture stories
We often talk about our narrative experiences with others. For example, we might talk about the latest TV show or book in a series with friends. How does the media of a narrative (text, picture story) affect how we talk about it? Despite the fact that narratives can be experienced across different media, few studies have addressed the impacts of varied media. This study explored similarities and differences in how narratives are experienced acros…

Gavin Jones’ scholarship on divorce in Asia: Understanding trends, patterns, and implications
This paper highlights Professor Gavin Jones' seminal work on Asian divorce patterns, with a particular focus on Southeast Asia's Muslim communities. Beginning in the 1980s, Jones addressed the challenges of fragmented and often unreliable demographic data on divorce. With careful compilation and analysis of aggregate data, paired with firsthand surveys and ethnographic studies, he set a foundation for examining shifting divorce trends in Southeas…
Unequal childhoods in China: Parental education and children's time use
Drawing on Lareau's binary conceptualization of parenting as concerted cultivation and accomplishment of natural growth, we examine how parental background determines the degree to which the two parenting practices are realized in China. To do so, we examine how parental education shapes children's weekly time use patterns on planned activities (academic and nonacademic) and unplanned activities. Using multi‐level mixed‐effects linear models base…
The prevalence and stressors of job burnout among medical staff in Liaoning, China: A cross-section study
The Chinese medical staff had high prevalence of job burnout. Some factors of demographic and work situations were associated with job burnout. The medical staff considered the relationship with patients and work tasks are the two major stressors. These two stressors are also the major indicators associated with job burnout. The hospital administrators should be aware of the risk of burnout. Efforts should be made to ameliorate the status of job …

Education and Childrearing Decision-Making in East Asia
Previous research on household labor has focused more on its physical participation and less on the mental and managerial responsibility. In this paper, using data from the 2006 East Asia Social Survey and the 2012 International Social Survey Program, we evaluate how couples made childrearing decisions and the role of relative education in shaping such decisions in urban China, Taiwan, and Japan. We find a dominant “co-pilot” model of childrearin…

Parents’ Migration and Adolescents’ Transition to High School in Rural China: The Role of Parental Divorce
Using both quantitative and qualitative data collected in a migrant-sending county from 2012 to 2013, this article examines the mechanisms through which parental migration could shape adolescents’ transition to high school in rural China. Though parental migration improves children’s educational outcomes via social remittance of education value, it also leads to a decline in children’s educational achievements by increasing the odds of parental d…

Effects of Revegetation on Soil Organic Carbon Storage and Erosion-Induced Carbon Loss under Extreme Rainstorms in the Hill and Gully Region of the Loess Plateau
These results indicate that natural revegetation is more effective in enhancing SOC storage and reducing soil erosion than artificial vegetative recovery on hillsides. However, natural secondary forest communities, with higher SOC content and storage capacity, may also contribute to larger SOC loss under extreme rainstorms
Paradox in marriage values and behavior in contemporary China
Despite a rapidly growing body of literature on marriage behaviors in China, we know very little about the changes or continuities of marriage values that accompany or underlie these behavioral transformations. Using nationally representative samples from the 2006, 2010, 2012, and 2013 Chinese General Social Surveys (CGSS), we investigate the patterns and determinants of marriage values across birth cohorts of men and women. Analyses reveal an in…
Coming of Age in Times of Change: The Transition to Adulthood in China
This article aims to (1) describe trends for Chinese young adults' pathways into adulthood for birth cohorts that have experienced distinct historical events over the past half century and (2) examine factors that shape young adults' transitioning behavior. We draw data from the 2005 to 2008 Chinese General Social Survey. In contrast to the increasingly protracted trend seen in many Western societies, the more recent Chinese cohorts transitioned …
