Longitudinal Effects of NYC’s Gifted and Talented Program: Evidence From a Staggered Difference-in-Differences Approach
This study estimates the effects of New York City’s (NYC) Gifted and Talented (G&T) program on students’ absenteeism and academic achievement. Leveraging a longitudinal student-level dataset and a staggered difference-in-differences approach, we provide evidence on middle and high school absence and achievement outcomes for students who entered G&T in grades 1 through 3. For students in G&T, we find modest but consistent effects on attendance and…
Modeling Demographic Change in NYC’s Gifted Education Program Using the Representation Index
This study analyzes demographic representation in New York City’s Gifted and Talented program from 2010 to 2023. We examined participation rates and citywide representation indices, accounting for district differences and temporal trends. Findings reveal persistent disparities, with Black and Hispanic students chronically underrepresented throughout the decade. The COVID-19 period coincided with substantial participation declines in 2020–2021 acr…

Propensity score methods for causal inference and generalization
Getting critical with compelling questions: Shifts in elementary teacher candidates’ curriculum planning from inquiry to critical inquiry
While recognized as a foundational practice, social studies educators struggle with enacting inquiry-based instruction. With critical inquiries that examine sociopolitical and other injustices, developing aligned compelling questions represents a challenge, particularly for elementary teachers. Informed by four lenses of criticality from social studies scholarship, this design-based mixed methods research follows 28 elementary teacher candidates …

The Role of Distributional Overlap on the Precision Gain of Bounds for Generalization
Over the past ten years, propensity score methods have made an important contribution to improving generalizations from studies that do not select samples randomly from a population of inference. However, these methods require assumptions and recent work has considered the role of bounding approaches that provide a range of treatment impact estimates that are consistent with the observable data. An important limitation to bound estimates is that …

A Feminist Critique of Self-Defense and Provocation in Battered Women's Cases in England and Wales
This paper critically examines the law of self-defense and provocation in cases where battered women kill their partners. It is argued that neither self-defense nor provocation adequately recognizes the situation most battered women find themselves in, and the present criteria for both defenses reflects this inadequacy. Legal advocates and supporters of battered women who kill have thus sought to find alternative strategies for battered women's d…
