Influences of motivation on students’ learning anxiety self-regulation: A comparison between male and female students
This study explored gender differences in students’ motivation, learning anxiety self-regulation (LASR), and their relationship. A total of 3,739 4th-9th graders participated in this study, with 1,875 male and 1,864 female students. Results of t-tests showed that although male students reported significantly higher levels of motivation and LASR than female students, the small effect sizes suggested that these differences were not educationally me…
The Response of Soil Preferential Flow Characteristics to Vegetation Restoration in the Hilly and Gully Region of the Loess Plateau
Preferential flow considerably affects soil infiltration in the hilly and gully regions of the Loess Plateau, where large‐scale vegetation restoration under the Grain‐for‐Green Program has substantially altered the soil structure. However, the mechanisms underlying the vegetation restoration‐mediated modification of preferential flow characteristics and the preferential flow‐mediated internal regulation of infiltration partitioning remain insuffi…

Latent profile analysis and influencing factors of psychological resilience in parents of children with autism
The psychological resilience of parents of autistic children exhibits distinct categorical characteristics. Medical staff should implement targeted and personalized interventions tailored to these categories and their influencing factors to enhance the psychological resilience of this population
Death of agrarian societies by a thousand cuts: Non-corporate ‘pin prick’ and medium-scale land grabs
In terms of scale, the land rush has unleashed the interlinked categories: corporate large-scale, non-corporate pin prick and medium-scale land grabs. For the local population, the latter two types are ubiquitous parts of the land rush, yet these tend to be invisible to media and academic researchers. These are land ‘control grabbing’ done in a variety of ways: legal and illegal, openly or by stealth, with or without use of extra-economic coercio…
Resistance to extractivism: Pin-prick land grabs and ‘failed’ corporate land deals
Resistance to extractivist land grabs is diverse in character and trajectory, at least those in Colombia, Ethiopia, Myanmar and China. We argue that this diversity is influenced by the social structures and institutions upon which land grabs unfold. These conditions also shape how land grabs take shape across time and space. We have identified two broad types of land grabs in terms of status: operational corporate and failed corporate land deals;…
Migrants, farmers and farmworkers and the politics of land and labour: An Introduction to the Symposium
In this article, framing and introducing the Special Issue on ‘Migrants, Farmers and Farmworkers’, we argue that the interaction between structural, institutional and political dynamics shapes the character and trajectory of social relations among migrants, farmers and farmworkers, which in turn influence or could influence the character and trajectory of broader struggles within and against capitalism, and the building of systemic alternatives. …
Migrant labour flows and interconnected agrarian transformations in Southern China
While contemporary debates about agrarian transformations that include topics like the persistence of family farms, agrarian capital accumulation, and simple reproduction squeeze remain vibrant, discussions about the increasingly significant role of migrant wage labour, which further complicates these processes, remain limited. In this paper, we argue that the process of capitalist accumulation in some sections of the agrarian and food system sec…
Migrant (farm)workers and farmers in China and Myanmar: A Perspective From the Sugarcane Sector
In this paper we argue that the most critical factor that shapes the character and trajectory of the sugarcane sector in China is neither land nor labour, individually, but rather the interactions of social dynamics around land and labour, and specifically migrant labour. We argue that not only that the political economy of land and labour together drive agrarian transformation in the sugarcane sector, but more precisely that it is the process of…
Reflecting on the Plantationocene: The political economy of sugarcane plantations in Guangxi, China
This paper reflects on the concept of the Plantationocene through an analysis of sugarcane plantations in Guangxi province, China. It argues that although these plantations are owned and operated by local villagers, they are de facto controlled by corporations, and subject to state intervention through a 'zoning scheme'. They are constructed and operated according to the same logic as other plantations all over the world, namely, the logic of ext…
Embedding the poor into the industrial system: What we can learn from poverty alleviation through industrial development in China
Poverty alleviation through industrial development in China contributes to the long-standing debate on how the poor could benefit from the development. It creates four industrial organizing approaches (i.e. households operating independently, intermediary organizations providing linkages, modern enterprise leading and asset income distribution) and three ways of participation for the rural poor (i.e. participating as petty commodity producers, wa…

Rurally rooted cross-border migrant workers from Myanmar, Covid-19, and agrarian movements
This paper examines the situation of rurally rooted cross-border migrant workers from Myanmar during the Covid-19 pandemic. It looks at the circumstances of the migrants prior to the global health emergency, before exploring possibilities for a post-pandemic future for this stratum of the working people by raising critical questions addressed to agrarian movements. It does this by focusing on the nature and dynamics of the nexus of land and labou…
Development and validation of a Chinese medication literacy measure
BACKGROUND: Despite the impact of medication literacy (ML) on patients' safe use of medications, existing instruments are mostly for general health literacy measurement or designed for specific disease populations, with few specifically designed for ML. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate the first Chinese medication literacy measure (ChMLM). METHODS: The ChMLM was developed by a multidisciplinary and bilingual expert panel and subsequently pilot-…
Land control and crop booms inside China: Implications for how we think about the global land rush
This paper aims to broaden the scope of analysis of the contemporary global land rush by examining crop booms not only outside, but inside China; and investment flows not only from China, but also within and into China. It does so by examining the eucalyptus and sugarcane sectors in southern China, which have witnessed investment booms during the past decade, with capital being infused by both domestic capital and foreign capital, including Finni…
Local State Corporatism or Neo- Guanxilism ? Observations from the county level of government in China
Chinese economic and social development in the past three decades has been typically state-led, in which capital and government officials are gradually allied through guanxi—a social psychological network that connects individuals with continued exchanges of favours, emotions and resources. This transforms many traditional characteristics of guanxi and encodes it with new features deeply rooted in institutional settings in contemporary China, whi…
The Challenge of Global Governance of Land Grabbing: Changing International Agricultural Context and Competing Political Views and Strategies
The emergence of ‘flex crops and commodities’ within a fluid international food regime transition, the rise of BRICS and middle-income countries, and the revalued role of nation-states are critical context for land grabbing. These global transformations that shape and are reshaped by contemporary land grabbing have resulted in the emergence of competing interpretations of the meaning of such changes, making the already complex governance terrain …
Internal migration and left-behind populations in China
The astonishing scale of internal migration in China since 1980s can be compared to only a few cases in world history. The migration gave birth to a vast number of peasant workers with their family members left behind in rural communities. Dominant studies on migration address mainly the following questions: why people migrate, what impacts migration has brought about, and how to cope with such positive or negative influences. This review paper b…
