  • The Sophist's Puzzling Epistêmê in the Sophist

    Open Access•David J Murphy•ARTICLE•The Classical Quarterly•2023•References: 4

Against prevailing interpretations, this article contends that Plato's Sophist and Statesman accord the sophist a kind of ‘knowing-how’ ( epistêmê ). In Soph . 233c10‒d2, the Visitor and Theaetetus agree that the sophist has not truth but a δοξαστικὴ ἐπιστήμη . But modernity has been enabled by the rapid and accelerating expenditure of our one-time inheritance of fossil fuels, and…

  • Isocrates and the Dialogue

    David J Murphy•ARTICLE•The Classical World•2013

Parallels allow us to connect many passages in Isocrates to dialogues of Hippias, Antisthenes, and Plato. Although Isocrates articulates a conception of fiction, he treats views voiced by characters in dialogues as the authors '. He also uses fictional elements (e.g. in Or. 3, 12, 15) to express his own views. From Isocrates and Plato I formulate the constructs "story register" and "rhetorical register" for the wavelengths of communication that I…
