The Hill at the End of the World
This article compares versions of the Search for the Sacred Hill - a millenarian movement seeking an enchanted terrestrial paradise for indigenous communities in the marshes of North-Eastern Bolivia. Some versions cast the movement as a precursor to real indigenous political action, while others cast it as a trial of faith. The settler roots of Plurinational Bolivia
This article analyzes a land conflict in Latin America through the lens of settler colonial studies. I focus on an area of the Bolivian Amazon known as the Alto Beni, where a government-sponsored colonization project settled indigenous colonists from the Bolivian highlands in territories occupied by the Mosetén people. This article explores oral histories about the foundation of the Mosetén Indigenous People’s Organization (OPIM) in Bolivia. In so doing it aims to add nuance to scholarship on Bolivian social movements from 1990 to 2010 by focusing on connections and continuities between indigenous organizations and the systems of political association that predate them. Ethnographic fieldwork necessarily involves making choices about which communities to work with, sympathize with, and support. This article explores the moral or ethical frameworks through which anthropologists make those choices. This response summarizes and compares three scholars' approaches (Marcelo Bohrt, Robert Albro and Pamela Calla) to the Morales administration's efforts to decolonize the government of Bolivia. Seeking the common ground among them, I find that all three recognize the importance of symbolic and discursive changes, which have allowed some previously-excluded individuals to access positions of authority within the state apparatus.
