In Search of the double-dividend effect in South Africa
This study examines the threshold effects at which environmental taxes simultaneously enhance economic growth and improve environmental quality in South Africa. Using data from 1994:Q1 to 2022:Q4, we estimate both kinked regressions and formal threshold regressions. The results indicate that environmental taxes foster economic growth (reduce emissions) when they remain below a threshold range of $6365–$6556 ($3320–$5980) million in revenue. Compa…

Our study examines the impact of visual nudges on encouraging water-saving behavior in response to the water shortage in Nelson Mandela Bay. We conducted a randomized experiment in two female student residences at Nelson Mandela University, assigning one as the treatment site with nudge imagery and the other as a control. Water usage was tracked in both sites through a smart water meter system, and the data were analyzed with a difference-in-diff…
Bridging immunization gaps
Zambia’s 2024 Measles-Rubella Supplementary Immunization Activity (SIA), conducted from 23 to 28 September across all 116 districts, targeted children aged 9–59 months to address immunization gaps exacerbated by COVID-19 disruptions and responding to ongoing measles outbreaks. This community case study evaluates the effectiveness of microplanning, the feasibility of real-time digital monitoring, and the equity of reaching zero-dose children durin…
Exploring the Role of Genetic Diversity and Cultural Norms in Covid-19 Vulnerability
The COVID-19 disease outbreak is the deadliest viral pandemic our generation has experienced, and much uncertainty remains over the varying vulnerability of different populations to the virus. This study investigates whether long-term evolutionary processes, such as genetic diversity and culturally embedded behavioural norms, can help explain why countries experienced different levels of COVID-19 infections and mortalities. Using a sample of 133 …
Knowledge creation and economic growth
economic growth continues to be a crucial determinant of the achievement of socioeconomic goals.therefore, the observed declines in economic growth and productivity levels over the last few decades have been a cause for concern, and this has reignited the discussion on the importance of intangible sources of economic growth and productivity such as intellectual property, research, technology, software and human capital.this study investigates the…
Governance, institutional quality and economic complexity in selected African countries
New economic thinking speculates that the diversification and sophistication of economic capabilities/structures is key in explaining why African countries lag in development behind the rest of the world. We question the extent to which non-traditional growth factors such as governance and institutional quality are related to economic complexity for 35 African countries. We estimate panel GMM regressions using 8 different measures of governance/i…
The impact of climate change and economic development on fisheries in South Africa
This study investigates the influence of climate change and economic development on the patterns of Fisheries catches in South Africa from 1960 to 2021. Our research employs wavelet-based spectral tools to analyse the time–frequency interrelationships among the variables and these methods differ from conventional econometric and statistical techniques which are strictly confined to the time domain. Our findings reveal that economic development ha…

Too poor to be clean? A quantile ARDL assessment of the environmental Kuznets curve in Sadc countries
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is a fit of the environmental Kuznets curve for Southern African development community (SADC) countries. To this end, we estimate a quadratic regression between greenhouse gas emissions (CO 2 , N 2 0, CH 4 ), per capita income and other controls, using the pooled mean group (PMG) and quantile autoregressive distributive lag (QARDL) models applied to annual data spanning from 1990 to 2021. …
The human capital–economic growth nexus in SSA countries
Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of human capital on economic growth for a selected sample of nine SSA countries between 1980 and 2014 using a panel econometric approach. Design/methodology/approach The authors estimate a log-linearized endogenous using the fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) and the dynamic ordinary least squares (POLS) applied to our panel data time series. Findings The empirical analysis sho…
Does unemployment aggravate suicide rates in South Africa? Some empirical evidence
The purpose of our study is to investigate the cointegration relationship between suicides and unemployment in South Africa using annual data collected between 1996 and 2015. The study relies on the bounds approach to autoregressive distributive lag (ARDL) cointegration model to establish long-run and short-run cointegration between unemployment and suicide rates. Furthermore, suicide data is further disintegrated into ‘sex’ and ‘age’ demographic…
