Do Measures of Systemizing and Empathizing Reflect Perceptions of Gender Differences in Learning Affordances
Gender differences in systemizing and empathizing are sometimes attributed to inherent biological factors. We tested whether such effects are more often interpreted as reflecting men’s and women’s different learning affordances. Study 1 ( N = 624) estimated gender differences in item-level activities from systemizing and empathizing scales (SQ, EQ) in large representative samples. Lay coders (Study 2, N = 199) and psychology experts (Study 3, N =…
Further Disadvantages of Socioeconomic Status
Attention has been given to increasing the sense of belonging of students from disadvantaged socioeconomic groups in higher education (HE). Research in belonging has focused on objective indicators of socioeconomic status (SES; i.e., educational status, household income), yet focus on subjective socioeconomic status (SSS) is more limited. We address this gap in two studies, including a cross‐sectional survey ( N = 503) and semi‐structured intervi…
Storying the River
What happens when the scientific method meets the creative process of narrative construction? This article seeks to story a section of Dyarubbin (the Hawkesbury-Nepean River)-an iconic yet degraded waterway encircling the Sydney Basin that carries with it vital cultural, recreational, economic, and agricultural values. Like many peri-urban waterways, the mounting pressures of population growth, industrial and agricultural pollution, and rapid urb…
Lower extremity physical function and quality of life in patients with stroke
Higher LEPF (i.e better TUG performance) at baseline, was associated with an improvement in QoL from 3- to 12-months post stroke. These results highlight the critical role of physical function, particularly baseline LEPF, in influencing the QoL of stroke survivors
A framework for evaluating women’s leadership programmes
The increase in women’s leadership programmes has been paralleled by a growing demand on behalf of private and public sector stakeholders for pragmatic reporting on impact assessment. Yet, there remains limited research and tools available for conducting evaluation of women’s leadership programmes. Based on an extensive review of the literature and co-design with a sub-national Australian government, we develop an evaluation framework for women’s…
Gender inequality in science, technology, engineering and mathematics
Lab-based activities provide essential skills for students within STEM disciplines, as lab activities provide students with research skills and science knowledge. Therefore, it is critical to note that female students have reported feeling less confident in conducting lab-based activities and report a lower sense of belonging in the lab. In two studies ( N = 544) we examined gender differences in the time that students spent, and perceived they s…
“(P)ink”
Creating a learning context
By exploring the nature of siblings' verbal interaction in the television‐viewing situation, this research examines a learning context that is created during coviewing. Data were obtained from a case study of a single sibling pair and a participant observation study of 51 children from 24 families. Examination of the form and content of siblings' interaction corroborates the basic assumption that children play an active role in interpreting the t…
