  • Deep Time and Disaster

    Open Access•Christine Hansen•ARTICLE•Environmental Humanities•2018

In the late summer of 2009, a massive firestorm swept through more than one million acres of dense bush in the southeast corner of Australia, killing 173 people and leaving more than 7,000 homeless. In the aftermath of the disaster, commentators almost universally described the blaze as “unprecedented.” This essay examines that claim in the light of contextualizing environmental histories and finds that although such firestorms are rare, they are…

  • Component-Based Approach for Educating Students in Bioinformatics

Open Access•David Poe, Nirmala Venkatraman et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•2009

There is an increasing need for an effective method of teaching bioinformatics. Increased progress and availability of computer-based tools for educating students have led to the implementation of a computer-based system for teaching bioinformatics as described in this paper. Bioinformatics is a recent, hybrid field of study combining elements of biology, statistics, and computer science. This paper describes the implementation of a system called…

  • Repression at encoding

Christine Hansen, Christine H Hansen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1992•Cited by: 3

In previous research, the emotions associated with repressors' memorial representations were found to be more discrete than those associated with nonrepressors'. In each of the 3 experiments reported here, repressive discreteness was apparent in repressors' appraisals of emotional stimuli at the time they were encoded. In 1 experiment, Ss appraised individual facial expressions of emotion. Repressors judged the dominant emotions in these faces as…

  • Repression of emotionally tagged memories

Ranald D Hansen, Christine Hansen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1988•Cited by: 8

We asked subjects to recall memories of events that evoked feelings of anger, sadness, fear, and embarrassment. These memories evoked patterns of dominant and nondominant emotions. The dominant emotions evoked by the recalled events were no less intense for repressors than nonrepressors, but repressors' patterns of nondominant emotions were less intense than those of nonrepressors. The data suggested that for repressors the associative network of…

  • Motion and flow in heritage institutions. Two cases of challenges from within

    Open Access•Christine Hansen, Ingrid Martins Holmberg•ARTICLE•Nordisk Museologi•1970

Through two case studies, one in Australia and one in Sweden, this paper looks at how seemingly stable heritage institutions such as museums, archives and government repositories can be reformed through engagement with subaltern subjects. Highlighting institutional permeability rather than conservative resistance, we follow the movement of this “motion and flow” and how it in turn affects ideas of what constitutes both “heritage experts” and broa…
