Towards a deep and reparative wellbeing in schools: Confronting historical trauma in Irish education
Purpose This paper examines how historical and intergenerational trauma continues to shape wellbeing in Irish education. Drawing on trauma theory, collective memory, power and institutional betrayal, it interrogates whether Ireland’s current wellbeing policies can be meaningfully enacted without addressing the enduring legacies of colonialism, religious control and institutional abuse. This article examines the role and operations of the parliamentary navy in Ireland between 1649 and 1653. Following the execution of Charles I in January 1649, the English parliament prepared an expeditionary force to be led by Oliver Cromwell to suppress its enemies in Ireland. In August 1649 he landed in Dublin and in the years that followed Cromwell and the military commanders who came after him gradually defeated the alliance of confederates …

In 1643, Robert Rich, the second earl of Warwick, the parliamentary lord high admiral, issued directions for naval officers in the Irish squadron to execute any soldiers seized whilst crossing from Ireland to join royalist armies in England and Wales.
